Dear Athlete,
The Tasmanian Sailing Academy (TSA) is a joint initiative of Yachting Tasmania, The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania and Yachting Australia. The TSA has established a sailing Elite Development Program with the Tasmanian Institute of Sport
The primary objective of the TSA is to provide high performance coaching and related services to Tasmanian senior youth and adult dinghy sailors who intend to represent Tasmania at national or international sailing regattas.
Admission into the TSA is offered to sailors in the following selected classes: 470, 420, 2.4m, 29er, Bic sailboard, Laser, Laser Radial and Laser 4.7. Other classes may be included in the TSA if class strength and commitment to achievements of TSA objectives are demonstrated by those classes.
Membership includes high performance coaching throughout the year, associated off water sessions both theoretical and fitness oriented, planning assistance, on-going support and advice and some competition support.
Objects and Aims
The TSA is devoted to providing high level coaching to senior youth sailors who:
- are aspiring to compete at the Australian Youth Championships and ISAF Youth Worlds, Olympics and Para Olympics;
- are preparing for State and National Championships and other major events; and
- demonstrate a commitment to sailing at a high level.
Eligibility
To be eligible for selection into the TSA, sailors must:
- sail a TSA selected class (nominated above); and
- must demonstrate a commitment to the TSA program and improving their sailing skills and ability; and
- must intend to compete at State Class and National Championship and, if eligible, the Tasmanian and Australian Youth Championships during the 2013-14 season.
Selection Process
- Selection for the TSA will be by application only. A written application form is attached which must be lodged by 17th May 2013.
- Eligible sailors may apply for selection in April with membership confirmed in May each year for a period of 12 months from 1 July to 30 June.
- The TSA Selection Committee may request evidence of an applicant’s previous sailing results in order to decide on the suitability of inclusion in the TSA.
- Successful sailors will be notified by mail by the end of May 2012
Tasmanian Institute of Sport (TIS) Elite Development Program (EDP)
The TSA has a program in place with the TIS that provides additional support to elite athletes selected from within the TSA squad. To be selected athletes must be competing in the international youth (including Laser 4.7), Olympic or Para Olympic classes. The TIS program support includes health and physical assessments, strength and conditioning, nutrition, sports psychology and time management/education. Selected athletes are required to commit to all TIS requirements. Selection criteria developed by YA for all state high performance programs is used to select the members of the TIS EDP. Athlete performances at the Australian Youth Championships and various other regattas including class nationals form the basis of the selection criteria.
Review
The TSA squad will be reviewed periodically in consultation with each athlete and the TSA selection committee. Performance, attendance and commitment at sessions, contribution, fitness and measurable progress in each athlete’s training and competition plan will be continually assessed so as to ensure the TSA meets its primary goal of supporting Tasmanian sailors wishing to compete at the highest level in their respective classes at a state, national and international level.
Coaching
Coaching is will be provided as follows;
- A draft coaching program is attached. Full details of all TSA events will be available on the Yachting Tasmania website prior to end of May 2013 and will also be circulated via email to all members of the TSA. Attendance at a number of nominated coaching sessions is compulsory.
- Additional coaching sessions will be arranged at the initiative of TSA athletes and coaching staff.
- Coaching support at selected major regattas including the Australian Youth Nationals Championships will be provided by TSA coaches.
- Coaching in match racing based on demand.
Annual Membership Fee
$450 per participant (arrangements to pay in two instalments may be made prior to 1 July 2013)
TSA Team Uniform
Each newparticipant will receive a:
- TSA Polo Shirt; and
- Yachting Tasmania lycra sailing vest.
Other clothing may be provided during the year. Each TSA member will be expected to wear their TSA clothing to related events at the request of TSA organisers.
