Position Title: Dietitian – Part time

Reports to: Practice Manager

LapSurgery Australia is one of the largest bariatric surgery facilities in Melbourne and provides a comprehensive multidisciplinary team approach to achieve optimal health benefits and weight loss for its patients.

2. Job Summary

The Dietitian is responsible for:

1. Practising in accordance with the Dietitians Association of Australia Professional Standards and Code of Ethics.

2. Providing a high level of evidence based, clinical expertise, with the aim of delivering effective clinical outcomes in the most efficient manner.

3. Participating in the development of a collaborative multidisciplinary team approach to achieve optimal patient care and outcomes.

4. Working in a flexible manner to meet the requirements of the dietetic workload.

6. Contributing to planning, developing and evaluating protocols, guidelines and clinical services.

3. Nature and Scope of the Position

Work relationships

Clinical multidisciplinary teams including surgeons, specialist nurse practitioners, physicians, bariatric specialist GP’s, psychologists and administration staff.Dietetic colleagues (potentially in the future).

4. Responsibilities/Accountabilities

Professional Service Delivery

• Conduct patient assessment, intervention, education and counselling to achieve optimal patient care.

• Demonstrate a high level of clinical expertise, incorporating best practice principles into dietetic service delivery whilst maintaining professional competency standards and ethics.

• Provide one on one consultations to patients pre and post operatively.

• Document in the patient’s medical history all relevant information to patient care, goal and outcomes.

• Work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team to achieve optimal patient outcomes.

• Develop a high standard of knowledge in relevant clinical areas through participation in professional development and/or research activities.

• Participate in the development and evaluation of evidence based education material and resources.

• Have an appreciation of the budget process and practise fiscal responsibility.

• Act as a mentor and support to potential future employee dietitian’s as required.

• Participate in induction programs for new dietetic staff as required.

• Accept responsibility for all projects and actions.

  • Present at information seminars for new potential patients interested in finding out more about bariatric surgery. This will be during evenings / after hours.
  • Work between various LSA sites including Frankston and Berwick. (Note: workload is predominately at the Boronia site).
  • Be involved in consultation of research projects, writing up of research proposals, actively participate in implementation and writing up of research projects.

Occupational Health & Safety

• All staff are required to observe safety rules and maintain safe conduct in the performance of their work to preserve the safety, health and welfare of themselves, other staff members, clients and visitors.

• Participate annually in training and application of principles of Fire/emergency procedures.

• Recognise and report OH&S risks to yourself, patients and others in the work environment.

• Ensure equipment is kept in safe working condition.

• Adhere to infection control guidelines and Occupational Health and Safety policies and procedures.

• Maintain a safe, tidy and hazard free work environment.

• Attend and contribute to debriefing following critical incidents.

• Use high level of communication and interpersonal skills to promote teamwork and relate effectively with members of a multidisciplinary team including medical and nursing staff, patients and families.

• Collaborate effectively with all other team members and external agencies for efficient and effective patient management.

• Attend and actively participate in Clinical Meeting days.

• Work in partnership with colleagues and other units to ensure an integrated approach to the delivery of quality outcomes throughout LapSurgery Australia.

• Contribute towards the promotion of a friendly and cooperative work environment.

• Maintain and share information with colleagues.

• Evaluate service provision and explore opportunities to improve services based on customer feedback, data analysis and available evidence.

• Contribute to the promotion of excellence and continuous improvement in all work undertaken.

• Contribute to the development of Dietetic procedures and protocols.

• Ensure quality projects and research projects are completed in an accurate and timely manner.

Adherence to Privacy/Confidentiality Requirements

• Adhere to Victorian privacy laws – Information Privacy Act 2000 and the Health Records Act 2001, as well as other laws that regulate the handling of personal information.

• Ensure that all information related to patients and LSA is treated as confidential.

7. Key Selection Criteria

Essential Selection Criteria:

  1. Eligible for membership of the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) and Accredited Practicing Dietitian program.
  2. Holder of a current Driver’s Licence
  3. Well consolidated post-graduate experience
  4. Demonstrated knowledge, skills and experience in assessment and provisional of evidenced based intervention in a range of dietetic areas.
  5. Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  6. Demonstrated high level of written and verbal communication skills
  7. Demonstrated experience in the design of research, and quality improvement activities
  8. Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development and education.

Desirable selection criteria:

  1. Evidence of having participated in research
  2. Expertise working in the area of weight management
  3. Experience in bariatric surgery nutrition management
  4. Involvement in working parties and special interest groups
  5. Experience in presenting at seminars and group education programs
