Baltimore: Portal to the American Identity
A National Endowment for the Humanities “We the People” Project
- A summer-fall workshop series open to all BCPSS Social Studies teachers, grades K-12. Priority placement will be given to teachers of grades 4,5,8,9, and AP US History(BCPSS American History courses)
- Funded by a Faculty Humanities Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). This project was given NEH’s special “We the People” designation for “promoting knowledge and understanding of American history and culture.”
- For each event, participants will receive stipends ($100 per workshop), as well as a continental breakfast and lunch, membership at area museums and historic sites, and eligibility to earnMSDE professional development credits.
- Activities will include scholarly content seminars with noted historians, comprehensive tours of Baltimore area museums and historic sites, and lesson demonstrations from BCPSS master teachers.
- Site hosts include Maryland Historical Society, Mount Clare Museum House, Homewood House, Jewish Museum of Maryland, Frederick Douglass Isaac Myers Maritime Park, USS Constellation, B & O Railroad Museum, Baltimore Museum of Industry, and Reginald F. Lewis Museum.

- Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at the MountClareMansion and HomewoodHouseMuseum. Title: Daily and Home Life in Maryland During the Late Colonial and Early National Periods (1760-1820)
- Monday, June 25, 2007 at the Jewish Museum of Maryland(funded by a contribution to the Jewish Museum of Maryland from the Bank of America) Title: Immigration to Baltimore (1850-1945)
- Saturday, September 22, 2007 at the Frederick Douglass Isaac Myers Maritime Park and the USS Constellation. Title: The Historic Baltimore Seaport: Gateway to the United States (1800-1860)
- Saturday, October 13, 2007 at the B & ORailroadMuseum and Baltimore Civil WarMuseum. Title: The B &O Railroad and Baltimore’s Role in the Civil War
- Saturday, November 10, 2007 at the BaltimoreMuseum of Industry. Title: The Cradle of Industry (1865-1920)
- Saturday, December 1, 2007 at the ReginaldF.LewisMuseum of Maryland African American History and Culture. Title: African Americans and the Emergence of Modern Baltimore (1900-1968)
Registration Instructions.
Admission letters and other correspondence will be sent via EMAIL. If you do NOT have an email address you may inquire about your status by calling the Social Studies Specialists in the BCPSS Curriculum Office at 410-396-8573.
First preference will be given to applicants who intend to attend EACH of the seven workshops. Registration is limited to 40 teachers per event.
