Cite all sources using the CSE method (or ISO 690 Numerical in Word). The first example has been done for you.

Complete the self-assessment rubric before submitting to Moodle. Avoid printing this if possible.

1.  Annotate the diagram to show the carbon cycle and processes involved.

A / Respiration (1) / B / photosynthesis / C / Fossil fuel emissions
D / decomposition / E / respiration

2.  Outline some of the methods used to measure or estimate atmospheric carbon dioxide.

Recent history: by looking at the trends in atmospheric gases and collecting the data.

Geological history: one of the methods are by taking ice samples.

3.  The topic of increasing carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere has been the source of intense debate with regard to climate change in recent years. This graph shows the famous ‘Keeling Curve’ from Mauna Loa laboratory in Hawaii. Find out more here:

http://earthguide.ucsd.edu/globalchange/keeling_curve/01.html

a.  Describe the overall trend shown in the graph.

Overall we can see the the amount of c02 in the aire is constantly fluctuating but generally has been rising.

b.  Explain the annual fluctuations in CO2 levels.

The C02 level are different because of the uneven distribution of C02 due to the vegetation. This is why the graph fluctuates.

c.  Suggest one human impact and one natural cause that could have led to the overall trend shown in the graph:

Anthropogenic: one cause could be the industrial revolution when many facrories and cars were build and produced large amounts of C02.

Natural: a natural cause could be volcanic eruptions, mainly pyroclastic which produce large amounts of C0 and C02

4.  Identify three greenhouse gases other than carbon dioxide. 3 other gasses are nitrogen, oxygen and carbon monoxide.

5.  Explain the greenhouse effect with the aid of a diagram. Include short-wave and long-wave radiation.

The atmosphere keeps all the gasses inside the earth while some heat leaves but some is reflected.

6.  Explain how increased atmospheric levels of greenhouse gases lead to an enhanced greenhouse effect.

Due to human activities there have been increasing the levels of carbon dioxide and other 'greenhouse gases' such as methane and oxides of nitrogen in the atmosphere. That this may lead to increased global temperatures and climate change.

7.  Outline some of the possible consequences of a global temperature rise on arctic ecosystems.

Ice coverage:

Climate changes:

Niches:

Plant distributions:

Animal populations:

8.  Outline the precautionary principle. The principle states that if the effects of human-induced change would be large, perhaps catastrophic, those responsible for the change must prove that it will not do harmbefore proceeding.

9.  Give two other examples of the precautionary principle in effect in Biology or Medicine.

Two more examples are : burden of proof and occams razor.

10.  Evaluate the precautionary principle as a justification for taking strong action in response to the threats posed by the enhanced greenhouse effect. What are some of the steps that we could take? This video might help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mF_anaVcCXg

Take significant action / Take no action
Global climate destabilization is… / True
False
