Affiliated with the Central Virginia Chapter of the Autism Society of America. Provides support and education for parents of children with Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome.
Virginia Autism Resource Center: 379-6580
Providing parents/educators/recreators with an array of resources/training materials for children with Autism/Asperger’s Syndrome.
Brain Injury Association of Virginia: 355-5748
Non profit organization providing a variety of educational and support services to individuals with brain injury, their families and service providers. This organization also hosts a summer camp, Camp Bruce McCoy for individuals with brain injury.
GENERAL COMMUNITY RESOURCES
Parent to Parent of Virginia: 795-1481
This is a consumer directed service facilitator provider for families of children with disabilities. They collaborate and educate on behalf of children and young adults with special needs and their families, and assists them in obtaining access to information, resources and support services.
Care Connections for Children: 827-1795
Team based approach brings together case managers, medical personnel, educators and family members to determine how children with special health care needs can reach their maximum potential.
Children’s Hospital: 321-7474
Provides a variety of workshops and summer camps for individuals with disabilities.
Henrico County Department of Mental Health & Retardation Services: 727-8500 and 222-2607 (Eastern Henrico)
Parent Infant Program/Early Intervention Program: Programs work with children ages birth –two years providing services which may include physical therapy, occupational therapy, audiological evaluation, nutrition education and respite care.
T/TAC: 828-6947
Through VCU, this is Virginia Department of Education’s training and Technical Assistance Center. A great resource for looking at assistive technology, plus classroom design, universal access, etc for special needs students.
RECREATION RESOURCES
Henrico County Division of Recreation and Parks - Therapeutic Recreation: 501-7275
Provides programs and summer camps specially designed to meet the needs of youth and young adults with physical/ mental or emotional disabilities. The division also provides inclusion services for disabled individuals attending any program the county offers.
Jewish Community Center Theater Group: 740-5967
The “Dreamers” is a theater group designed for individual with disabilities.
