JUST FOR FUN
Gambling
When he blew a wad of money at my blackjack table in the casino, a customer stood up and yelled, “How do you lose $200 at a $2 table?!” Before I could speak, another customer replied, “Patience.”
Great Writer
Visiting a college campus, the prospective student spots a building called Hemingway Hall. “That’s nice,” he says, “a building named for Ernest Hemingway.”
“Actually,” says the tour guide, “it’s named for Joshua Hemingway.”
“Was he a writer?” the student asks.
“Yes. He wrote a big check.”
LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM
(Continued from inside page)
The Warriors’ football team motto is “All in,” and the four cornerstones of the football program are Relationships, Trust, Discipline and Character. He explained each: Relationships: This includes the intertwined relationships among the players, parents and coach. “We need them to know we value them as young men,” said Coach Q, adding that his own son, Quevin II, will graduate from Centennial High School in Las Cruces this year. Trust: Players build trust by doing the right thing, not only on the field, but in other areas. Discipline:
Players need to learn the concept of doing what they have to do, not what they want to do, in how they conduct themselves in the classroom, in the community and on the field. Character: How players conduct themselves at home, on the weekend and in the classroom. “You can’t have a double life,” he said. “I hope to build a team that will be held to a higher expectation.”
Coach Q said players will be expected to spend an hour each school night on homework, and another hour on film study. The team will employ a no-huddle, spread offense. “Give us time to get it going,” he added. Practices will be upbeat, with a positive tempo.
Players will spend time in the weight room this summer as part of a strength and conditioning program. His goal is to develop a systematic offensive, defensive and special teams program “which is what the colleges are doing.” Tuesday, May 20, will be the team’s first day on the field.
Coach is a single parent who will soon be moving to Socorro with his dog, Django. Radio station owner Steve Edmondson noted that 25 percent of sponsorship for live coverage of football games will be returned to the program. Coach Q, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, is a former law enforcement officer. Coaching, he said, “is my calling.”
