Restaurant Shopping Assignment Spotter's Checklist
1. Is the outside sign in good condition and is it well lighted?
2. Is the parking lot clean and swept well? If it is very busy, is there a valet parking system? One that works?
3. Is the landscaping around the building neat and well maintained?
4. Are all outside lights working?
5. Is the dumpster well hidden?
6. Are all windows spotlessly clean?
7. Is the entry neat and clean?
8. Is it clear from the moment you walk in whether you seat yourself or a hostess seats you?
9. Did the host/ess: 1) catch your eye, 2) smile at you, and 3) speak to you before you could speak to him/her?

11. Did they decide where to seat you quickly?
12. If you passed any type of display, specialty board or anything unique about the restaurant, was it pointed out?
13. Were you guided directly to your table at an even pace?
14. Were chairs pulled out for you? Were they free of crumbs? Wobbly?
15. If there was 1 or 2 of you, were you seated at the most optimum place for viewing the rest of the room?
16. If the table was unsatisfactory was a change made quickly and with a smile?
17. Did the host/ess leave you with a few nice words?
18. Were the menus that you were given clean and fresh, not used looking?
19. If you were given a wine list, was it pointed out?
20. Was the tabletop 'picture perfect" when you were seated? A complete set of shiny clean silverware, chipfree plates' chipfree sparkling clean glassware, a crisply folded clean napkin on a clean table, placemat or linen? Where there any rips or holes in the linen? If salt and pepper shakers and sugar bowl were on the table, were they all full, wiped down and Clean? If there was a vase, was it clean? Was the water clean? Was the flower living or artificial? If there was a candle, was the candleholder spotlessly clean? If there were table tents were they clean, new looking and eye catching?
21. Were the floors around the table spotlessly clean?
22. Were the lighting and atmosphere comfortable?
23. Was there a conformable distance between tables?
24. Were extra place settings removed in a dinner restaurant?
25. If there was food on the table, e.g., cream, jellies, condiment bottles, snacks' were the containers clean and full?
26. Did a service person approach the table within 60 seconds, if only just to acknowledge your presence?
27. If a bus person came to your table first, did s/he smile and speak clearly?. Did s/he greet you
28. Was there gum underneath the table?
29. Were table bases clean?
30. If the restaurant serves liquor, was liquor offered within two minutes of your being seated?
31. When a server approached the table, did s/he smile and greet you sincerely?
32. Did s/he tell you the specials well in advance of taking your order?
33. Did they know all the kinds of liquor that the bar stocks?
34. When drink orders were taken, did they up sell to the perineum liquor?
35. If you did not want an alcoholic beverage, did they offer a nonalcoholic beverage?
36. Did the server return with your drinks within three m1nutes?
37. Was the bar glassware clean and unchipped?
38. Was the garnish fresh and well presented?
39. Did the drink taste good?
40. If the drink was placed on a bar table, was a clean, dry cocktail napkin given?
41. Was the glassware handled from the bottom of the glass rather than from the top?
42. Did the server offer to take your food order after the drinks were delivered?
43. Was the server able to answer every question you had about the menu in detail?
44. While taking your order, did the server seem interested, friendly and relaxed?
45. Did s/he recommend house specialties or make suggestions when you hesitated or asked for assistance?
46. Did the server suggest appetizers by describing them to each guest as they ordered? (If the restaurant served appetizers.)
47. Did the server "go for" a complement order for each guest? Example, soup or appetizer, salad and entree?

49. Could they answer all your questions about wine and did they pronounce the wine correctly?
50. When the order was complete, did the server excuse him/herself before leaving the table? Did s/he pick up the menus?
51. Were the restrooms spotlessly clean? Stocked with toilet paper and soap?
52. Were all the lights in the restaurant working?
53. If you passed service stations, were they neatly organized and clean?
54. If water was served, was it kept refilled?
55. Were drink reorders taken when the drinks were down 2/3 of the way?
56. Was food served in a timely fashion?
57. Were unforeseen delays explained?
58. When the food was served, did everyone get exactly what they ordered?
59. Were the plate presentations attractive?
60. Was the entree placed directly in front of each guest?
61. Were the plates clean and free of cracks or chips?
62. Were the condiment bottles that were served clean and full?
63. Did the server check back within 2 to 3 minutes of serving the meal?
64. Were all requests taken care of quickly and with a smile?

73. Did your server keep the table neat, organized, and free of debris throughout the meal?
74. Was the table cleared COMPLETELY for dessert and coffee and only the necessities were kept?
75. Did the server tantalize you with great descriptions for desserts?
76. Did they describe all the desserts available or show you a dessert list?
77. Did they offer coffee and tea automatically?
78. If applicable, did they offer an after dinner drink? Was the coffee or tea served quickly and was it steaming hot? Was the coffee cup clean?
79. Were the desserts attractively presented?
80. Did the desserts taste good?
81. Was coffee and hot water refilled automatically?
82. Did you feel rushed at the end of the meal or were you given the time you wanted to spend?
83. Were employees always busy working when they were in sight? Or did they stand around talking?
84. Were all employees clean cut, good looking, in fill clean uniform and did they speak in moderate tones?
85. When you wanted your check, was it delivered to you quickly? Was it neat and legible?
86. Did you feel you received good value for the dollar?
87. As guests leave, as the tables cleared quickly? Surfaces washed with clean cloths when appropriate?
88. Did you see a manager circulating around the dining room during your visit?
89. Are overflowing trays of dirty dishes left in sight on tray stands?
90. Are plants healthy looking?
91. Did your server genuinely thank you for corning?
92. Are all the floors in therestaurant free of any dirt or debris?
93. Is the bar attractively set up?
94. Is the bar free of any bar odors?
95. Is the bar top clean?
96. If there is a phone at the host stand, is it answered within three rings?
97. Is there a pay phone available? Is the area neat and clean? Is a phone book available?
98. Are walls, ceilings, fixtures, furniture and decorations clean and free of dust?
99. Did the host/ess catch your eye and sincerely thank you as you left?
100. Did you leave feeling taken care of? Would you go back again?
