Job Description

General Manager

(Part Time Salary £24,000 plus Employers Pension contributions)

Responsible to: The Management Board of the WSA

Responsible for:Overall responsibility for all staff including those of the Association, consultants and external sources.

Main purpose of the role:

  1. To provide direction and leadership to the Welsh Sports Association (WSA) by managing and co-ordinating the implementation of the strategic plan.

The key areas of the plan for which the GM will have a lead responsibility will be:

Corporate and strategic management

Communications and marketing

Strategic alliances

Coordination and line management of consultants and training organisations

Developing people

Main tasks under each of these key areas will include:

Corporate and strategic management

Establish a streamlined and efficient infrastructure through which to deliver, monitor and review the strategic plan

Provide leadership for the WSA

Establish effective and efficient administrative systems appropriate to a modern sports organisation (WSA)

Build the financial stability of the WSA

Satisfy the requirements of legislation as it affectsWSA’s operation and corporate governance

Ensure best practice in the management, administration and accountability of the WSA to its members and partners

To support national partners in the identification of training needs and provide expertise as required

Communications and marketing

Establish effective internal and external communication systems to promote WSA and sport throughout Wales.

Sponsorship

Strong relationship with national partners and agencies

Partnership with Sport Wales

Strategic alliances

Develop strong and effective strategic alliances with other organisations to support the implementation of the strategic plan

Relationships with the UK sports associations

Strong relationship and support to national partners

Developing people

Ensure that WSA has a skilled work team comprising paid staff and voluntary officers who work together to achieve the WSA’s goals.

Ensure all HR policies and employment rules are in line with the Association’s requirements

Day to day responsibilities will include:

  • To work with WSA’s Board to monitor and review the Strategic Plan
  • To coordinate the implementation and delivery of the Strategic Plan
  • To seek funding sources and submit funding applications for WSA
  • To represent WSA on relevant organisations and groups and to foster collaborative working
  • To respond on behalf of the voluntary sector of sport in Wales to consultations in regard to legislation, policies and strategies which may impact upon sport in Wales.
  • To maintain, and develop, where appropriate, communication channels with members and other organisations
  • To provide support to the Board
  • To manage the daily working of the WSA and maintain first class governance procedures
  • To work closely with the member governing bodies to identify their needs in terms of governance, management, finance, training and other appropriate services, and to share best practice
  • To enhance the profile of the WSA as the voice of voluntary sector sport in Wales
  • To develop networks with key decision makers
  • To raise the profile of sport particularly in the voluntary sector, and of Welsh NGBs
  • To take forward, as far as possible, the priorities outlined in the WSA Manifesto for Sport.
  • To work closely with Sport Wales in matters of mutual interest
  • Any other reasonable duties requested by the Board of the WSA.

Managing others / Proven track record of management in a similar type of organisation, working with partners. Providing advocacy, and managing consultants.
Voluntary sector experience
Strategy plans/policy development / Success at the formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies and plans, both short and long term. / Experience of working with the professional and voluntary sector

Leadership

/ Experience of providing leadership across the whole organisation
Significant experience within one organisation
Managing staff / Creation and management of work programmes for self and others, from a strategic plan.
Management of staff. / Voluntary sector – volunteer management
Managerial and professional skills. / Human resources, financial, commercial and organisational management skills / Experience of using essential skills in the voluntary sector.
Management of resources
Budget management / Budget creation and management (minimum £100,000 and up to £1m annual turnover)
