College Connection

HHS hosts its College Connection Night on Monday, November 5, at 5:30 p.m., in the library. College representatives and financial aid representatives will be available to answer questions for parents/senior student regarding admissions, financial aid, housing, and FAFSA.

Letters of Recommendation

Students, who are in need of letters of recommendation, completion of college or scholarship applications, should deliver them to the principal, teacher, or counselor at least 3 weeks before the deadline. Remember to beat deadlines, not just meet them.

Thanksgiving Break

The Hobbs schools will be dismissed November 21 – 23 for the Thanksgiving Holiday.

American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society Great West Division College Scholarship Program is designed to ease the financial and emotional hardships associated with fighting cancer and to assist young cancer survivors in reaching their academic potential and fulfilling career dreams. Lea County Detachment 1185 Marine Corps League Scholarship

The Lea County Detachment 1185 Marine Corps League would like to invite seniors to apply for their scholarship. The Lea County Marine Corps League provides $250 for tuition, books to students for first-year study at institutions of higher learning. Four scholarships will be awarded. Applications are available in the HHS Counseling Office. The deadline is April 2013.

ENMU S-STEM

Eastern New Mexico University is pleased to announce scholarships for science, technology, engineering and math students (S-STEM). Students can qualify for up to $10,000. Applicants must have a GPA of at lease 3.0 or score 22 or higher on one of the following: ACT Composite, ACT Math Sub score, or the ACT Science Sub score. How to Prepare for Multiple Choice Tests

1. Do all the questions you know first, checking or circling the numbers of the ones you want to come back to

later.

2. Use key words to help you determine an answer.

3. Read all the possible answers before selecting one.

4. Use the process of elimination, discounting the answers you know are wrong.

5. Watch out for questions that begin, “Which one is not an example of …”

6. Make certain you mark the answers according to the directions.

7. Read carefully, looking for words that best qualify statements, such as good, bad, much, little, most, best.

Senior Things to do List: November

·  Nov. 1-15: Early Decision admissions, colleges may require test scores and applications between these dates.

·  Complete at least one college application by Thanksgiving.

·  Have registrar send transcripts to colleges.

·  If you haven't already done so, attend college planning and/or financial aid information nights and college fairs.

·  If necessary, register to retake the SAT and/or ACT.

·  Request financial aid forms and applications. Double check the deadlines for submission.

·  Follow up to ensure your employers, teachers, and guidance counselors send letters of recommendation.
