i. Option 1-Write a response essay to Seppala and Wong’s articles on social media and its effect on relationships
ii. Option 2-Write an essay about the connection between one or both of the quotes on the board and the use of the internet, particularly social media.
iii. Option 3-Write a response essay about one or more of the ideas in the poem “Look Up”.
iv. Option 4-Write and film your own spoken-word poem on the subject of social media. You may work with ONE partner.
f. Homework: Brainstorm ideas. Be prepared to begin drafting tomorrow.

Writing Situation: Social media is now considered by many to be a necessity for staying connected to the world around us. Despite the benefits that come from being involved in social media, there are also specific relationship dangers.
Writing Directions: After reading and annotating the texts on social media (2 articles), write a response essay in regard to ideas expressed in the text(s). A response essay is exactly what it sounds like. The writer reads a text and then responds to an idea or ideas within it. Your writing must include the 6 basic parts of an essay, as well as evidence from the text. No “I” or “you” statements.
Standards Addressed:
W2—Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts, and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content
a. Introduce a topic; organize complex ideas, concepts, and information so that each new element builds on that which precedes it to create a unified whole
b. Develop the topic thoroughly by selecting the most significant and relevant facts, extended definitions, concrete details, quotations, or other information and examples appropriate to the audience’s knowledge of the topic.
c. Use appropriate and varied transitions and syntax to link the major sections of the text, create cohesion, and clarify the relationships among complex ideas and concepts.
d. Use precise language, domain-specific vocabulary, and techniques such as metaphor, simile, and analogy to manage the complexity of the topic.
e. Establish and maintain a formal style and objective tone
f. Provide a concluding statement or section that follows from and supports the information or explanation presented (e.g., articulating implications or the significance of the topic).

Writing Situation: Social media is now considered by many to be a necessity for staying connected to the world around us. Because so many have an online presence and use the internet every day, there is a need to keep in mind wise principles so as to avoid dangers.
Writing Directions: Write an essay explaining how the two quotations discussed in class could be applied when it comes to using the internet wisely. Your writing must include the 6 basic parts of an essay, as well as evidence from the text. No “I” or “you” statements.

Writing Situation: The use of the internet is now considered by many to be a necessity for staying connected to the world around us. Despite the benefits that come from using the internet, many people have strong feelings about the amount of time spent using the web.
Writing Directions: After studying the poem “Look Up”, write and film your own spoken-word poem on the subject of social media. You spoken-word poem must be at least 3 minutes in length, must have a clear beginning, middle and end, must show evidence of significant thoughtfulness and effort, and must be well-produced. Also, your video should contain elements of narrative and must be Mr. Whited-appropriate. You may work with ONE partner.
