First Announcement & Call for Papers

The Caribbean Water and Wastewater Association (CWWA)
in association with
The Ministry of Water and Housing, Jamaica
announces the
17th Annual CWWA Conference and Exhibition
under the theme
Integrated Water Resources Management – Developing Water Systems and Managing Waste
October 6-10, 2008
Montego Bay, Jamaica

BACKGROUND

The water resources of the Caribbean states exist in fragile states of equilibrium and as the populations grow and the range and volume of demand for water grows, the management of water resources becomes increasingly important to national development. That an integrated approach is required is now more patently obvious than ever and as we attempt to manage the water resources we see the increased importance for the management of our wastewater which many times impacts directly on our water resources. In fact with the increasing technological advancements in wastewater treatment, the effluents are now being seen as a part of the water resource equation whether for recharge of aquifers, replacement of irrigation demand or for a growingnumber of industrial uses.

Within this context research has shown an increasing impact of solid waste on our water resources both from the direct impact of the waste in rivers and streams and the effect of leachate on groundwater and surface water where proper management systems are not in place.
