Merit / Demerit System
The following information provides guidelines for earning merits and being assessed demerits. Merits and demerits are points earned for extraordinary behavior and performances. These points influence your leadership grade, which impact your overall JROTC grade.
MERITS: Are a GOOD thing!
Merits (1-3 points) can be awarded for the following examples:
Participating in JROTC sponsored or approved events
Good conduct in class (given out with progress reports)
Positive recommendations (any WIHS Teacher or Administrator)
A/B honor roll on report cards
Accomplishments or recognition from an academic or athletic team
Any form of volunteering (in or out of school) *Must be documented on “Team/Cadet Leader Worksheet”
Superior Performance (academic excellence, athletic accomplishment or mentioning) and any other extraordinary accomplishments determined by JROTC Instructors
DEMERITS: Are a BAD thing!
Demerits (1-3 points) can be given for the following examples:
1 Point (Minor Offense):
Undirected profanity
Public display of affection in uniform
Littering or failure to clean up after oneself
Loud disruption
Tardy
Unauthorized absence for assigned/volunteered activity
Disrespect toward fellow Cadet(s)
Uniform dress code violation
Failure to wear prescribed uniform
Inability to maintain accountability of uniform articles and accouterments
2 Points (Serious Offense):
Chronic minor offenses
Gambling
Disrespect toward a WIHS employee,JROTC chaperone, and/or guest
Out of assigned area / skipping class
Disruptive behavior
Violation of School and JROTC safety policies
Leaving the classroom without permission
Cheating or Plagiarism
Suspension more than three (3) days (ISS or OSS)
3 Points (Major Offense):
Possession and/or utilization of an illegal substance and alcohol
Distribution of a prescription medication
Fighting, posturing, or being a party to an affray
Possession of a dangerousobject (including mace and pepper spray)
Arson
Sexual harassment/misconduct, vulgarity, obscene gestures
Profane, vulgar, or racist language/gestures
In possession of JROTC equipment without authorization
Vandalism of school or personal property (to include Cadets, students, or employees)
Interference with school officials
Chronic serious offender
Incorrigible attitude / blatant disruption
Acts thatshock the social conscience
Possession of pornographic materials
Pulling Fire alarm
The above mentioned lists are not all-inclusive. Any substandard behavior or appearance that could discredit WIHS Warrior Battalion or the US Army will result in demerits and punishment as determined by the instructors. Other factors such as excellent attendance, leadership, or completing extra work could positively affect your leadership grade. Remember, merits and demerits are meant to point out to the cadet exceptionally good or bad behavior.
