Job Title: Stage Manager (Fixed-term contract)

DEPARTMENT: Technical

Responsible to: Technical Manager

Overall Role Objective:

To work as part of the Stage Management team contributing to the smooth running of rehearsals and performances produced by the organisation. To work closely with the other technical departments, production teams, guest artists, chorus, and liaise to some degree with other departments in the organisation.

Duties and Key Responsibilities:

·  The preparation, organisation, and running of productions in the rehearsal venues and on stage in Leeds and on tour.

·  Liaison between the artistic team and other departments, ensuring that all production and rehearsal information is communicated and recorded.

·  Ensuring health and safety is observed at all times and the relevant risk assessments for every working environment are completed and adhered to.

·  Learn, understand and ensure that Opera North company policies and working agreements are implemented and adhered to. (Inc. BECTU, EQUITY, MUSICIANS UNION)

·  Assessing and anticipating the implications of productions in all venues and consulting with the artistic team and the relevant technical departments.

·  When possible, attending rehearsals and performances of other Opera North productions and events in order to cover for any other member of the department in their absence.

·  Undertake relevant training as required by the company.

·  Prepare and implement the advance and weekly scheduling of the department as required.

·  To attend scheduling meetings when required.

·  Allocation of dressing rooms for Leeds and all touring venues.

·  Produce and communicate technical information requirements for each production.

·  Write up and produce rehearsal information with the deputy stage manager and communicate to the relevant departments and members of the creative team.

·  Call and chair production meetings as and when required.

·  Write up show reports after each performance and ensure that these are distributed ASAP and that any appropriate action required is undertaken before the next performance.

·  IT literate in WORD, EXCEL, OUTLOOK

Person Specification:

Experience

·  Previous experience in the role of SM is preferred

Knowledge

·  Ability to read a piano/vocal score to a good standard (test may be given)

·  IT - Some knowledge of Word essential, familiarity with Outlook, Excel and Publisher an advantage/preferable

Attitudes

·  Confidence to deal with large numbers of people

·  The ability to be a team leader essential

·  Ability to deal with problems / situations in a calm and professional manner

Health and Safety

Terms and Conditions

Salary: £565.02 per week

Hours of working: Flexible (aggregate does not exceed the Work Time Directive)

Prepared to work flexible hours’ dependant on the needs of the production.

The contract covers hours as required between 09:30 and 22:30 (23:30 where a get out is scheduled). These will be set down by the Technical Manager / Stage Manager in the weekly call sheet and the artist may normally expect one day off in seven. The HOD will ensure that no member of the department works disproportionate hours. The management will endeavour to notify of changes of call at least 24 hours in advance.

Normal place of work: Opera North, Premier House & the Grand Theatre, Leeds

The base for the company is Leeds / if touring with the company, then the appropriate rail fares and opera and ballet touring rates will apply.

Holiday entitlement: 33 working days’ pro rata per year, including statutory bank holiday entitlement.

Pension: Opera North will automatically enrol you into the company pension scheme and after 3 months’ service will make a contribution equivalent to 5.5% of your basic pay, should you meet the current legislative criteria. You will not be required to make a personal contribution to qualify.
