·  Understand how these physical characteristics impacted later development of South Carolina cities and towns and continue to have an impact on present-day growth.

Rice Areas formed along the coastline. / Savannah Town became important to the growing colony for its profitable Indian trade, and for frontier defense. A thriving business developed around Indian traders who with their pack horses spread throughout the western wilderness. In 1692 the Proprietors hoped for traders to reside at "Savannah town" (McCrady p.237). In 1698, Colonel Thomas Welch reached the Mississippi River on a trail that came to be the Upper Trading Path to the Chickasaw homeland (Atkinson p.25). Iron and woolen goods were offered in exchange for skins which came to be shipped by the thousands from Savannah Town to Charles Town, and then Europe.
·  The impact on SC’s industries and economy because of the natural resources:
o  lots of forests led to the development of the timber industry /
o  lots of forests led to the establishment of national and state forests to preserve natural habitats /
o  rich soil and a temperate climate zone allowed for agriculture (farming)
§  rice and indigo were grown along the coast
§  cotton, tobacco and peaches, also /
o  plenty of natural harbors and rivers first led to the establishment of trade
o  the fast flowing rivers of the Piedmont let to the creation of textile mills /
