DCACC Dog Fostering FAQ During Phase 1 Renovation
Included below are some frequently asked questions regarding dog fostering during our renovation. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at 630-407-2800.
Q. Why do you need dog fosters?
A. The DCACC building located at 120 N. County Farm Road will be undergoing a major renovation. During this time, all staff and animals will be relocated to off-site facilities. Staff, cats, and exotics (rabbits, hamsters, etc) will be located at 130 N. County Farm Road. Stray dogs and owner relinquished dogs will be housed off-site. The dogs available for adoption will need to be placed in foster homes for multiple reasons including available space at our partner facilities, and giving these dogs the opportunity for more socialization in a home environment helping them to be even more desirable for adoption.
Q. When will you need foster homes for dogs?
A. During our renovation project beginning in the middle of January 2016. The project is estimated to last 90 – 120 days.
Q. Will I need to foster for the entire length of the renovation?
A. No. You can foster for as long or as little as you would like and your schedule allows. Even if you foster for a few days, any little bit help us and the dogs.
Q. What type of dogs are considered adoptable and need to be fostered?
A. Adoptable dogs have undergone a medical exam, received their vaccinations, may have just had or are awaiting surgery as needed, and passed an extensive temperament test.
Q. What will be required of me?
A. We will need you to provide the basic needs of any dog, walks, feeding, etc… DCACC will have amended adoption hours at the 130 building and we ask that you bring your foster dog during these adoption hours and on weekendsas much as possible so that they are adopted quickly. You will not need to stay with your foster as we will have volunteers and staff coordinating the adoptions.
Q. What if I already have a dog?
A. A ‘meet and greet’ with your dog and the potential foster will be conducted by our trained staff to assess the behavior of both dogs. This will help ensure the foster will be a good fit in your home.
Q. What if I decide I want to adopt my foster (aka become a foster failure)?
A. Great! You will need to complete the adoption application andregular process and pay any adoption fees.
Q. What if I decide I can no longer foster the dog in my care?
A. Contact us and we will make other arrangements for your foster.
Q. Will the dog need any training?
A. It depends on the dog. Some older dogs will already be house broken, know sit, etc, while others will need help in these areas.
Q. Will I need to purchase anything for the foster?
A. That’s up to you. We will provide you with food, leash, collar, crate, etc… as needed to get you started. If you are running low on food, contact us and we will provide more. If you would like to purchase your foster dog a different collar or a sweater with your own personal funds, feel free!
Q. What if I have questions or concerns regarding health, behavior, etc during the time I foster.
A. You can call our foster hotline anytime during our regular business hours. If after-hours, please leave us a voicemail and we will return your call when the office reopens.
Q. What happens if my foster is sick or injured?
A. DCACC will take care of all medical needs. Contact usimmediately for further direction.
