Current position
Prof JP Rossouw specialises in Labour Relations, Sport Law, learner discipline and governance in education.
Academic outputs
He is the author or co-author of sixteen books on Education Law and eight articles in accredited journals. An international article was published in the Education Law Journal in the United Kingdom and two articles in the School Business Affairs Journal in the USA. He has read academic papers at international conferences in South Africa, England, Australia, Canada, Kenya, the USA and New Zealand.
Prof Rossouw regularly presents workshops for educators on labour law and sport law. As part of an international research project on learner discipline, he has also conducted research in South Africa, England, Australia and the USA.
Involvement in sport coaching and administration
Over a period of 30 years Prof Rossouw gained extensive experience on national level as participant, coach, referee and national gymnastics judge, and acted as administrator on various regional and provincial sport committees and organising panels of provincial sport events.
Various academic activities
• Prof Rossouw has acted as external examiner for M.Ed. and PhD students at UP,UFH, UFS, US and UJ.
• He has reviewed academic articles for five different journals.
• He was a member of the editorial board of the conference proceedings for the Int. Conference on Learner Discipline, 2-4 April 2007, Potchefstroom.
• In 2006 and 2007 he has taken part in several live discussions on Radio Sonder Grense on education law topics. In October 2009 he took part in a TV debate(KykNet) "Wat’s die storie?" on a topic related to religious observances in schools.
Grants and international research
• For a period of two months in 2004 he did research on learner discipline and sport law on invitation of the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia.
• On invitation of the Secretariat of the Commonwealth, London, he read a paper at the Commonwealth Review Meeting, Nairobi, Kenya (2001) and in Lusaka, Zambia (2002).
• In 2003 he received a grant from SAELPA and the NRF to read a paper at CAPSLE, St. Andrews, Canada.
• In 2005 he received grants from the Dean for conducting two pilot research projects:
.  An Education Law perspective on educator rights and educator security.
.  Values in Education
• In 2005 he received a grant (R9 000) from the Dean to do initial research in SA and to deliver a keynote speech, on invitation, at a Principal's Conference in Xiamen, China.
For a period of six weeks in 2006 he visited the UK (Chelmsford), the USA (Ohio, Oklahoma and Texas) for research on learner discipline, values in education and sport law. In this period he presented lectures at the respective Law Schools and faculties of Education on invitation of the Anglia-Ruskin University in Chelmsford, University of Dayton, Ohio, and the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Ohio. In this period he read a paper at the Education Law Association (USA) in October 2006 in Nassau, the Bahamas. He took part in a panel discussion on current Education Law issues at the UCEA conference in San Antonio, Texas, in 2006. For this he received from the NRF a grant of R15 000, in addition to a faculty RFA grant of R38 000.
In 2007 he embarked on a research project on Violence in Schools, which is an extension of the existing project on values in education. This culminated in an international conference for learners on 23-24 April, where he lead a research team of 12 academics. In 2008 he received a grant (R69 500) from the NW DoE for conducting the research project Violence and Values in Education in North-West.
In 2008 and 2009 he received a grant from the NRF for conducting research project “Educator rights and educator security in a changing education environment”. Granted: R84 000 for 2008; R84000 for 2009. Both years grantholder linked bursaries of R10 000 each for four Masters students were paid from this.
For four weeks in Mar-Apr. 2008 he visited the UK (Cambridge, Chelmsford), the USA (Cleveland) and Canada (Toronto) for research on various Ed. Law subjects. In this period he presented lectures at the respective Law Schools on invitation of the Anglia-Ruskin University (Cambridge Campus) and the Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio. In this period he read a paper at the Socio-legal Studies Association (UK) in March 2008 in Manchester. (Grant: R59 700)
He visited London for joint empirical research at schools in London during May 2009, in collaboration with colleagues at the Westminster University, proff Osborn and Greenfield. These colleagues visited South Africa in June 2009 for the South African phase of the empirical research.
Simultaneous with the research visit in May 2009, Prof Rossouw led a group of 13 school principals and SGB members for a tour to the UK, which included informal research at seven schools and the attendance of the conference of the School Governors' Association of England in Leeds. This tour is to be followed up by a similar tour in May 2010 to England and the Netherlands.
In 2009 Prof Rossouw took part in the North-West University ITUN evaluation process to determine teaching excellence, during which he received the ITUN bursary (R22000) for a category A rating.
