MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE GRADUATE COUNCIL
February 15, 2002

ABSENT: Dr. Miller, Dr. Cook, Dr. Clark, and Dean Meador.

1. The minutes of February 1, 2002 were approved.

2. Drs. Sharpe and Coles addressed the Council concerning the proposed curriculum reform in the German, French, and Spanish Masters of Arts programs.

On a motion by Watson, seconded by Chitwood, the Council approved the following changes, deletions and new course requests in the Department of Modern Languages. This approval was given subject to the Council receiving the appropriate and completed Request for Approval of New Graduate Course forms. There was one opposing vote.

3. The Council noted the Academic Deans' exception to item #5 in the November 2, 2001 Graduate Council minutes. On a motion by Burkett, seconded by Ponton, the Council voted to amend the new Request to Add a New Course form and the Request for Approval of New Graduate Course form. In cases involving non-traditional delivery/mode/location or significant technology-based instruction, the Council will act on these course requests only after the External Academic Affairs Committee has made recommendations.

3. Dr. Eftink informed the Council that the Administration has made the decision to discontinue the hooding of Doctor of Philosophy candidates during the morning commencement ceremony.
