Waldo County Trails Coalition Core Volunteers (partial list)

Cloe Chunn is a naturalist, outdoor educator, former high school and college teacher, and Registered Maine Guide. Author of Fifty Hikes in the Maine Mountains, Cloe has hiked the entire Appalachian Trail, and explored wild country as far afield as Antarctica, where she did geological research.

Jean English works for the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) and edits their newsletter and other publications. She was an adjunct instructor at Unity College for eight years, which included teaching two courses in environmental citizenship.

Maury Hepner is an energy engineer and served as Vice President/Director of several international ESCO's providing water and energy savings performance contracts to universities and hospitals. He has taught math and science at several high schools and worked with local towns and foreign governments to develop energy/water efficiency programs. As a school system sustainability coordinator, he developed permaculture based sustainability programs.

Bob Kohl has 36 years of administrative and planning experience with safety net health care systems, including 11 years as Executive Director of Near North Health Service Corporation, a federally qualified health center in Chicago and 17 years in leadership positions with the Ambulatory and Community Health Network of Cook County – serving 250,000 patients – part of the Cook County Bureau of Health Services, including Director of Operations. Bob also has worked with MaineCare and the Maine Primary Care Association in information management and quality improvement activities. His volunteer activities include various land trust, trails and community development efforts.

Mary Leaming is Program Director of Unity Barn Raisers, a non-profit community organization with open membership that works pro-actively to enhance small-town character and rural environment, while nurturing a thriving community-based economy.

Tom Mullin is an Associate Professor of Parks and Forest Resources at Unity College. He was a founder of the National Association for Interpretation and has worked for county, state and federal park agencies and been the Executive Director of two land trusts. He serves on the Appalachian Trail Conservancy's Stewardship Council.

Bob Olfenbuttel is retired after career in environmental health, safety and protection. Worked in government and private industry, managing development and application of innovative technologies to clean up contaminated soils, groundwater and sediments. Did same for technologies to minimize waste and pollution in industrial and commercial operations. Advanced degrees in engineering management and environmental engineering.

Buck O’Herin is a former high school and college teacher. He worked with high school dropouts for 8 years at The Community School in Camden Maine. He was a board member and the first executive director for the Sheepscot Wellspring Land Alliance for more than 15 years. He is a founding member of the Waldo County Trails Coalition and has been building trails since 1999. Has a M.S. in Environmental Education and has extensive experience guiding wilderness trips.
