GOOD NEWS - we want to celebrate the many successes occurring in arts education in North Carolina! If you have a “good news” item that you feel is appropriate to share with stakeholders throughout the state, please email the item to . Submissions should be focused on arts education accomplishments (examples would include teacher of the year designation – system or regional; innovative programs; regional, state or national recognition, awards, honors; etc) and should be limited to 100 words or less. The Arts Education consultants have the editorial right to screen and/or edit items before publication.
WEAVER ACADEMY PERFORMS IN SCOTLAND
Weaver Academy of Greensboro was thrilled to represent North Carolina Theatre at the 2010 Fringe Festival in Edinburg, Scotland. They spent 14 amazing days touring the country and enjoying twenty-six different theatre experiences! The team of 18 performed “The Little Baby Snoogle Fleejer,” a children’s play based on the story by President Jimmy Carter, adapted by Georgia playwright Ron Anderson. The production featured an amazing four-man puppet as the “snoogle.”

TEACHER USES TECHNOLOGY AS GATEWAY TO MUSIC
Linda Kilkenny was a high school band director for seven years. She has played flute, oboe, French horn, and saxophone. Kilkenny has combined her musical ability with her current job as instructional technology teacher at Haw River Elementary School. Now, Kilkenny is teaching students the basics of reading music and playing the piano using computers, software, and electronic music keyboards. Read the entire article at:

MUSIC AND ART CLASSES BEING ELIMINATED AT MANY OREGON SCHOOLS
Many Oregon school districts are eliminating music, art, and other electives because of budget concerns and increased pressure for students to perform well on standardized tests in math and reading. "Even if I see that music education is a benefit to kids on a day-to-day basis, the evaluation of my school, my county at the end of the year will be based solely on standardized test scores in a few subjects," said a director of a national music-education association. ARTS EDUCATION ESSENTIAL STANDARDS
The Arts Education Essential Standards (Version 3.0) are now posted online at: http://www.ncpublicschools.org/acre/standards/phase2/. The standards were approved as a consent item by the SBE on September 2, 2010 at this month’s State Board of Education (SBE) meeting and are scheduled to be implemented during the 2012-13 school year. Please stay tuned to the arts education listserv update for additional information as the Arts Education Essential Standards move through the development of Instructional Toolkits, professional development, and other support that will accompany the implementation of the standards.
