COURSE AND TEACHING EVALUATION AND IMPROVEMENT (CATEI) PROCESS

INSTRUCTIONS FOR TUTORS

INTRODUCTION

In the enclosed envelope you will find:

Ø  CATEI Evaluation Form C: SMALL GROUP TEACHING

Ø  Summary Form (Teacher’s Information Questionnaire)

Ø  A4 Envelope addressed to your School

The purpose of Evaluation form C: SMALL GROUP TEACHING is to obtain feedback form students on aspects of their learning experience and to obtain their feedback on your teaching in order to improve the overall quality of learning and teaching in the School/Faculty.

STEP 1:

In the tutorial that the evaluation is to be administered, indicate to your class that 10 minutes will be set aside for evaluation. Distribute the evaluation forms and ask for a student volunteer to manage the collection of the forms and their return to the School Office –provide the student volunteer with the relevant instruction sheet.

STEP 2:

While the students are completing the evaluation forms, you should complete the Teacher’s Information Questionnaire, indicating:

Ø  Front Page: your title, name, course code, session number administration date and enrolment number

Ø  Back Page: Teaching Faculty

STEP 3:

Give the summary sheet to the student volunteer and ensure they:

Ø  Insert the summary form into the envelope along with the completed evaluation forms;

Ø  Seal the envelope;

Ø  Sign along the seal. The student volunteer will then return the envelope to the School Office.

PROCESSING OF EVALUATION FORMS

The School Office coordinates the processing of all teacher and course evaluation through the Educational Testing Centre. After the end of session (usually 4-6 weeks) the summary forms and ‘raw’ completed evaluation forms (which include responses to open-ended questions) are returned to the School Office who will contact you when they are ready for collection.

DISTRIBUTION OF INFORMATION RELATING TO EVALUATION

A copy of the summary data relating to teacher and course evaluation (with the exception of the open-ended questions) is retained by the Head of School who uses this information (in aggregate and along with other measures) to:

Ø  Communicate the overall quality of learning and teaching in the School;

Ø  Gauge improvements over time;

Ø  Provide appropriate staff development support for learning and teaching;

RESPONDING TO FEEDBACK

Critical reflection is an essential aspect of good teaching. There is great strength in welcoming student feedback – both the positive and negative – as a means to improve your teaching. As part of this reflection process you may be required to discuss the outcomes of your student evaluations with your Course Leader.

These discussions can assist you to identify your areas of strength, aspects of your teaching that you would like to improve as well as steps to be taken to implement future changes/improvements to your courses/teaching.

SUPPORT FOR TEACHING IMPROVEMENT

The Education Development Unit (EDU) in the Faculty of Commerce and Economics can work with you in a confidential and supportive environment to assist in the development of strategies to improve your teaching and to provide resources. Please contact the Academic Developer, Dr Kerry Howells, to arrange for a consultation.
