Draft Elevator Speeches (v2) – September 29, 2012

What is the Heat is Power Association

The Heat is Power Association (HiP) is the trade association of the waste heat to power (WHP) industry. HiPadvances the market for WHP projects and technologies by educating decision makers and the public about the characteristics of waste heat as a resource for emission-free electricity generation and an economic driver for global competitiveness. Regarded as a renewable equivalent, waste heat is generated in massive quantities at industrial facilities every day and if harnessed to make power, could generate 10 GW of emission-free electricity in the United States alone. Heat is Power works diligently with policy makers to introduce federal legislation to get WHP recognized on par with renewables and with industry/government/NGO coalitions to incorporate WHP into state RPSs and efficiency programs. HiP members, including project developers, equipment suppliers, installers, and end users, are collaborating to develop a robust market for WHP technologies across the US.

Why the WHP Industry Needs Incentives

Massive quantities of waste heat are generated each day by US industry. If harnessed to produce power, waste heatcould generate as much as 10 GW of emission-free electricity, enough to power 10 million American homes, provide $3 billion in savings for US industry, and spur the creation of 160,000 new American jobs. However, without the incentives enjoyed by traditional renewables like wind, solar and geothermal, the market for emission-free WHP is limited. Fortunately, 70% of Americans favor tax credits for emission-free waste heat to power technology and 14 states include waste heat in renewable portfolio standards, incentive programs, or other mechanisms. By adding to the number of states that provide incentives to generate emission-free electricity and increase onsite energy efficiency, and by securing a 30% investment tax credit and/or the full production tax credit for WHP projects, WHP technology would be placed on the same playing field as traditional renewables, thereby expanding the market for this valuable resource.

Paragraph at bottom of HiP stationary

The Heat is Power Association is the trade association of the Waste Heat to Power (WHP) industry. Representing businesses everywhere[CD1], the not-for-profit organization is committed to educating decision makers and the public about the characteristics of waste heat as a resource for emission-free electricity and an economic driver for global competitiveness. The Heat is Power Association promotes the efficient, industrial use of emission-free electricity generated through WHP processes.
