2008 BUILDINGFoundations Bursary Award winners

·  Cheryl Mains is a Manitoba Housing tenant . She is currently enrolled in the bachelor of arts program at the University of Manitoba. In 2004, she was awarded the Special Entrance Scholarship from the Board of Regents and the student of distinction awards in 2006 and 2008. Mains has volunteered for various children’s organizations.

·  Tracey Parenteau is a Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council tenant from the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway First Nation community. She is currently enrolled in the faculty of arts at the University of Manitoba. She previously was awarded the Early Childhood Education Diploma from Assiniboine Community College. Parenteau volunteers with such agencies as Siloam Mission, Winnipeg Harvest and the Aboriginal Centre. She plans to become a social worker.

·  Tessia Jordan is a Manitoba Housing tenant and is currently enrolled in the four-year bachelor of nursing program at the University of Manitoba. She is interested in pursuing a career in nurse therapy and is considering becoming a psychiatrist once her degree is completed. Jordan attended the Mennonite Brethren Collegiate in 2006 and the Centre for Aboriginal Human Resources Development in 2007. She has volunteered at Anishnabe Fellowship Centre, Crossways in Common Community Centre and Folklorama.

·  Corinne Spence is a Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council housing tenant and currently enrolled in the Heath Careers Transition Program at the University of Manitoba so she can become a nurse. She is an honour graduate from the Health Care Aide Certificate Program at Red River College. She has also taken training in microcomputers at Kani Kanichihk. Spence volunteers at organizations such as Winnipeg Harvest, Elwick Village and Resource Centre.

·  Jennifer Petty is a Manitoba Housing tenant currently enrolled in the bachelor of social work program at the University of Manitoba. She was awarded the Aboriginal Child and Family Services Diploma and received the Governor General Bronze Medal in 2007. Petty volunteers in neighbourhood clean ups, block parties and at the Lord Selkirk School.

·  Phoebe Paddy is a Manitoba Housing tenant and belongs to the Thunderbird First Nation community. She is currently enrolled in the Medical Office Assistant Program from the Academy of Learning (South). Paddy volunteers at Healthy Start for Mom and Me and the Pimaataazihim Crisis Centre in White Dog, Ontario.

·  Carey Sinclair is a Manitoba Housing tenant and belongs to Mathias Colomb First Nations community. She is currently enrolled in the Aboriginal Community Wellness Diploma program at the University of Manitoba Extended Studies division. She previously took courses at Red River College. Sinclair volunteers with Native Women’s Transition Centre, North End Women’s Centre, Nine Circles Community Centre and Wolesley Family Place.

·  Sophia Kattenat is a Manitoba Housing tenant and belongs to the Roseau River First Nation community. She is currently enrolled in the Business Administration Program at Red River College. Kattenat volunteers with Tim Horton’s camp day and helps out with baking and donating toys in the community.

·  Marlene Aguilar is a Manitoba Housing tenant and is currently enrolled in the social work program at the University of Manitoba Inner City campus. She has previous education from the Aboriginal Child and Family Services Diploma Program. Aguilar volunteers at a local daycare and community centre.
