Oreo Cookie Moon Phases

Objective: To show and display the 8 phases of the moon using Oreo cookies.

What you need:

  1. Thick poster board or display boardapproximately 81/2” by 11” for backing.
  2. The Phases of the Moon template provided in class or online in the homework site.
  3. The Phases of the Moon diagram provided in class or online in the homework site.
  4. Why Does the Moon Have Phases? information sheet provided in class or online in the homework site.
  5. 8 Oreo cookies
  6. A popsicle stick or other tool to scrape and shape the frosting.
  7. White glue
  8. One page containing information and facts researched and written by you about how moon phases occur.

What to do:

1. Write your name, date and period number on the template and then glue it to your poster or display board.

2. Slowly twist an Oreo to maximize the amount of frosting on one side when you separate the halves. If it doesn’t work, you shouldprobably eat the cookie and then try again. Oh well.

3. Use the popsicle stick or other tool to create the phases of the moon out of the frosting. Use the diagram provided to guide you. If you carve the phase incorrectly or it is sloppy and inaccurate, you should probably eat the cookie and try again. Oh well.

4. Arrange the phases of the moon in their correct order using the template and diagram provided in class or online in the homework site. Verify for accuracy using the diagram provided.

5. Glue the cookies in place.

6. Using the Why Does the Moon Have Phases? information sheet provided in class or online in the homework site,type a one page summaryon how moon phases occur. Proofread for grammar, spelling, and punctuation, name date and period number. Turn it in with your display. Title your paper How Moon Phases Occur.

7. You must have both your Moon Phases project and the report summary to receive full credit.

As an alternative you may complete the following for full credit.Type a three page report about the Moon and its phases. Use the Why Does the Moon Have Phases information provided in class as well as other information you have researched.
