SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION

The Jamal M. Rashed Memorial Scholarship Fund, Inc., was set up in memory of our son Jamal M. Rashed. Jamal was killed on July 29, 1994 by a gunshot wound. Jamal was a born leader. He volunteered in the community. He loved GOD and he shared GOD’S love with his peers. He didn’t see the race of a person but the character of the person.

Jamal received numerous awards such as Who’s Who Among American High School Students, University of the South at Sewanee Summer Scholar Leadership award. He was president of Black Achievers, Oratorical winner 1993-1994; he had leading roles for Black Achievers Showcase. Jamal volunteered with various organizations in the community that served our inner city youth. Jamal was President of our youth department at church and participated in various areas of our church. A member of Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences Basketball, Baseball teams and elected to the Student Government. At Tyner he was president of his class and a member of the Model UN and Kappa League. He was also a member of Young Future Leaders of Chattanooga sponsored by the Metropolitan YMCA. Jamal’s dream was to become an Architectural Engineer and build the “Rashed Towers”. He was determined to achieve his goals through the guidance of GOD. His motto was “Life may be hard and it may not be fair” but as long as YOU BELIEVE IT, YOU CAN ACHIEVE IT.

This year we selected the topic for the scholarship “My Impact On The Community...Past, Present and Future” from one of Jamal’s last speeches. This topic had a great impact on Jamal decision to become an Architect. The building of the Rashed Towers came to Jamal in a dream. He laid his foundation by studying hard, being involved in church, school and the community.

With God’s guidance we have taken Jamal’s death from a tragedy to a triumph by awarding scholarships to area youth that want to make a difference in our community.
