UCEDD June 26, 2012 After Dinner Discussion with Steve Eidelman

1)How to transfer higher level knowledge from University to community

NASDDDS/ AUCD initiative

Lakin and Mosely: evidence based policy initiative

State departments have data and universities like data (pair the two)

AUCD synthesize evidence based policies around community employment/ transitions/ etc.

2) Have webinars to discuss policy briefs

2 briefs in development (community and employment)

3)(Bacon) adoption of innovations: best practice as innovation

peer to peer contact is key thing - gives info to state DD directors

4)Nisbet: Ted DD: best people in the field presenting their ideas/ best practice

Community of practice

5)Hear from peers who are making progress (and how) (Bacon)

6) (Ramirez) DD vs inclusive fear

7) Missing opportunity to educate larger community

8) (Steve) not only connections with DD agency, but also transportation, education, etc. due to retirement: 2 kinds of people enthusiastic each day is a check off to retirement

9) “Ask ____ “ online site

10) (Steve) who’s the we? NIH doesn’t necessarily see it as usefull

11) Doing enough to develop relationships with other groups who are doing it but not necessarily disseminating/ having best information. Enough collaboration with other organizations/ policy makers/ etc. Costs ½ million per year to do it right

12) Giving people skills to make choices with awareness/ use credible sources

Google Tripski (y)?

13) Create own wikipedia pages?

14) (George) multilevel thinking/ process:

  1. CDC demonstrated no one magic bullet (like wikipedia)
  2. need traditional hands on materials
  3. need abilities to harness

large grants: need to “communicate science”

15) (Steve) Challenge values on science but no offices that have a lot of money

people who get supports get it through school and Medicaid

Medicaid and CMS view themselves as insurance, not as capacity building

16) In time training

  1. What family wants/ provider wants
  2. “I have a problem now, what do I do?” need to know what is credible
  3. needs relationship with UCEDD - comes down to “who should they be calling”
  4. enhancing reliability of case managers/ network of people that families are involved with - providing trainings - case managers

17) (Bacon) as key audienceincorporating training into case management

Providersproblem is they are not supported when they leave

18) Credibility -Families want to hear what other families have done. Want a real story. Ohio: hires family advocates

19) Way of getting information out

Hired a film maker

Way of telling stories (with evidence based to show what works) but getting to general public

20) Problem: good providers are small

21) Fixing colleges of education (only non-violent solutions suggested here  )

  1. (Jan) people keep talking about accrediting standards- not current

reinforce segregation

  1. training new generations of teacher educators
  2. attacking accrediting bodies

22) Information Dissemination Strategies?

23) Homework: Rest of the summer DUE TO STEVE BY LABOR DAY 2012 (or the rest of their lives). Take a bureaucrat to lunch (in a sector you don’t work in)

As a first step to influence policy and practice: and be of use to state government. Focus on the cadre of career state people who don’t turn over rapidly.
