COURSE DESCRIPTION: Introduction to Human Studies is a foundational course for students interested in becoming a public advocate, educator, social worker, dietician, nutritionist, counselor, or community volunteer. Upon completion of this course, a proficient student will have an understanding of human needs, overview of social services, career investigation, mental health, and communication.

SUPPLIES:Folder or Binder with notebook paper and pockets

Small pack multi-colored paper (turn in to teacher)

2 glue sticks (turn in to teacher)

Small pkg. Styrofoam plates (turn in to teacher)

CLASSROOM POLICIES:

  1. Cell phones must be put away at all times and not used in the classroom.
  2. All work should be turned in on the assigned due date with a name and title.
  3. Work turned in late will be penalized by subtracted late points.
  4. Tests and quizzes missed due to an excused absence must be made up during the lunch period or before or after school.
  5. Tests and quizzes must be made up within two days of the excused absence.
  6. All students should follow the handbook Code of Conduct.
  7. Consequences for breaking the conduct rules will result in a conference and demerit as needed..
  8. Repeated violations of the student conduct code will result in a referral to the dean’s office.
  9. Behavior is factored with grades and this is subject to the teacher.
  10. Semester exams are cumulative and are worth approximately 25% of the final grade.

Personal Development and Communication

· Evaluate factors that impact human growth in areas related to personality development, self-understanding, and interpersonal relationships with family and peers.

· Develop and practice effective communication skills with peer, parents and acquaintances.

Research and Create an artifact that records and collects items that represents family history, qualities and heritage.

· Evaluate factors that contribute to and damage self-esteem and self-image in individuals. Recognize and formulate plans to intervene when bullying, peer pressure and unhealthy behaviors are present.

Nutrition and Home management

· Cite specific necessary dietary practices and recommendations for physical health.

· Practice safety and sanitation procedures related to handling, preparing, storing and serving food.

· Plan and prepare quick, nutritious meals to contribute to health and time management skills.
