ConnerCreekAcademyEastwasestablishedin1999asaPublicSchoolAcademycharteredbyFerrisStateUniversity.MichiganCollegiate,ourfacilityinWarrenforgrades7-12,openedin2008.Ourgoalistoprovideaqualityeducationtostudentsaswellasinstructionincharacterdevelopment.WehadourfirstgraduatingclassinJune2006.Asapublicschoolacademyweacceptchildrenfromthroughoutthegeographicregion.

Discipline andresponsibilityforone'sownactionsareofutmostimportancetostudents,parentsandteachers.Responsibilityisalearnedbehavioranddisciplineisoneoftheprinciplesnecessarytomaintainawell-balancedlife. Restorative practices are always the first line of discipline we consider and implement.
Achild'sfirstencounter withauthorityisathome;therefore,thebasisfordisciplineandresponsibilityresideswithinthehome.Parentswillbeinformedwhenunusualcircumstancesneedingdisciplinaryactionarise.Itisexpectedthattherewillbeparentalfollow-through.Withparentalsupport,theschoolcanbeofhelptothestudent.
Disciplineismaintainedwithfirmness,consistencyandfairness.Ourstaffmaintainsstandardsofbehaviorintheclassroomthroughkindness,loveandgenuineregardforthestudent.Whendisciplinaryactionbecomesnecessary,itisfirmlycarriedoutandtemperedbygoodjudgmentandunderstanding.
Studentsareexpectedtodisplayproperconductbyfollowingthedirectionsofteachersandotheradults, by demonstratingcourtesy to alland by exercising self-control in their behavior.This includesthebussesandbusstops.Anyviolationsaresubjecttoschoolpolicies.

General Behavior

3.Fireworks,firecrackers,matchesandotherflammablematerialsareprohibitedbylawandarenotpermittedoncampus.
4.Studentswillnotbringoncampusanyweapons(includingpocketknives,laserpointers,BBguns,andpelletguns),firearmsoranythingthatresembles a weapon orfirearm.
5.Profanityand/orvulgarityareunacceptable.
6.Honestyisexpectedatalltimes.Cheating,lying,stealingandplagiarismarenotacceptable.
7.Therightsandpropertyofothersaretoberespectedatalltimes.
8.School facilities, books,desks,lockers,etc.,areprovidedfortheuseofthe students.Damagingordefacingof suchproperty is unacceptable.
9.Studentsandtheirparentsareresponsiblefordamageincurredtoschool property,whetherwillfuloraccidental(includingbreakageofwindows,damagetothebuilding,abuseorlossofbooks,etc.)
10.Pridegrowsfromacleancampus.Studentsareencouragedtohelpkeepthecampusclean.
11.Nocandy,foodordrinksaretobeconsumedintheclassroomwithoutthe teacher’s permission.
12.Permissionmustbegivenforastudenttoleaveclassorcampus.Parentsmustsignstudentsoutandgetapassifgoingtoroom.
13.Unauthorizedvisitorsarenotpermitted.
14.Gamblingisnotpermitted.
15.Studentlockersarethepropertyoftheschool.Lockersareonloantothestudentstouse,withtheunderstandingthatschoolofficialsmayinspectthematanytime.
Classroom Behavior
Teachersareresponsibleforestablishingabehavioralplanwhichmaintainsapositiveclassatmosphereconducivetoqualityeducation.Studentsareexpectedtoberespectfulandcooperativewiththeirteachers.Ateacher'sdesk,cabinet,bookcase,etc.,areregarded
aspersonalproperty.
When a student'sbehaviororattitudeviolatesschool standards, various types ofdisciplineareapplied.Teachersandstaffmayreferstudents to anadministratorforviolationsthatareparticularlyserious.Teachersareencouragedtocontact parents/guardians whendiscernible patternsappear.
Cell phones/ElectronicCommunication Devices
Astudentmaypossessacellulartelephoneorotherelectroniccommunicationdevices(ECD)inschool,onschoolproperty,atafterschoolactivitiesandatschool-relatedfunctions,providedthatduringschoolhoursandina schoolvehiclethecellphone orECOremainsoff.
Also,duringschoolactivitieswhendirectedbytheadministratororsponsor,cellphonesandECDsshallbeturnedoffandstoredawayoutofsight. PossessionofacellulartelephoneorotherECDbyastudentisaprivilege,whichmaybeforfeitedbyanystudentwhofailstoabidebythetermsofthispolicy,orotherwiseengagesinmisuseofthisprivilege.
ViolationsofthispolicymayresultindisciplinaryactionagainstthestudentwhichmayresultinconfiscationofthecellulartelephoneorECO.

ADMINISTRATIVE DISCIPLINE
Thepurposefordisciplineistochangeerrantbehaviorandteachstudentstobeproductivelyincharge ofthemselves. Discipline isaprocess thattakestime and cooperation. Students willbe dealtwithonanindividualbasis,dependingonoffense.
MINOR Offenses
- Studentswillnotbedisruptive.
- Studentswillnotuseunacceptablelanguage,derogatorycomments,orvisualgestures.

Severe Clause

Theadministratorwillmeetwiththeparent/guardian,studentandotherinvolvedparties.
Theviolationwillbediscussedaswilltheparent's/guardian'sdisciplinaryaction.
Within24hoursoftheabovemeeting,theparent/guardianwillbeinformedoftheschool'saction.
A student willbeimmediatelydismissedfor:
-Sellingand/ordistributingdrugs or alcohol

A studentwill be immediatelydismissed with no option to re-enrollfor:

SNAP SUSPENSION
Ateacher,underMichiganlaw,isauthorizedtoimmediatelyremoveandsuspendastudentfromaclass,subjectoractivitywhenthestudent'sbehaviorisunruly,disruptive,orabusive,thatitsubstantiallyinterfereswiththeteacher'sabilitytoeffectivelyteachtheclass,subjectoractivityorthestudent'sbehaviorinterfereswiththeabilityofotherstudentsto learn.
Theteacher must immediately report thesuspensiontotheadministrationand direct
thestudenttotheofficeforappropriateactionbytheadministration.Assoonaspossibleafterthesuspension,theteachermustcontactthestudent'sparent/guardiantoarrange aconferencetodiscussthestudent'sbehavior.Theschooladministratormustattendthisconferenceifrequestedtodosobytheteacherorparent/guardian.
Anystudentsuspendedundertheconditionsofthispolicyshallnotbeallowedtoreturntotheclass,subjectoractivityfromwhichheorshewassuspendeduntilthepassageofonefullschooldayfromthetimeofthestudent'sinfraction.Studentsattendingseparateclassperiodsthroughouttheschooldayshallbeallowed,underthediscretionof the administration, to attendother classes taught by otherteachers.
WEAPONS, FIREARMS,CRIMINAL SEXUAL CONDUCT ANDARSON
TheConnerCreekAcademyEastBoardiscontinuallyconcernedaboutthesafetyandwelfareofstudents,staffandvisitorsand,therefore,willnottoleratebehaviorthatcreatesanunsafe environmentor threat tosafety.Astudentin possessionofadangerousweapon/firearmorwhocommitsarson orcriminalsexualconductonschoolgrounds(includingvehicles),inschoolbuildingsoratschool-sponsoredeventsshallbepermanentlyexpelled fromschoolandtheschoolshallimmediatelyreportanyaccidentinvolvingthepossessionofaweaponordangerousweaponorcriminalsexualconducttotheproperauthorities.

TheBoardofEducationprohibitsstudentsfrompossessing,storing,making,orusingaweaponinanysettingthatisunderthecontrolandsupervisionoftheSchoolforthepurposeofschoolactivitiesapprovedandauthorizedbytheSchoolincluding,butnotlimitedto,propertyleased,owned, orcontractedforbytheSchool, a school-sponsoredevent,includingathletic events, or inaSchoolvehicle.
Thetermweaponmeansanyobjectcapableofinflictingseriousbodilyharmorpropertydamageorendangeringthehealthandsafetyofpersons.Weaponsinclude,butarenotlimitedto,firearms,gunsofanytypewhatsoever,includingspring,airandgas-poweredguns(whetherloadedorunloaded)thatwillexpelaBB,pellet,orpaintballs,knives,razors,clubs,electricweapons,metallicknuckles,martialartsweapons,ammunition,andexplosivesoranyotherweapondescribedin18USC921.
Thispolicyshallalsoencompasssuchactionsaslook-alikeitems,falsefirealarms,bombthreats,orintentional calls tofalsely report a dangerouscondition.
TheSchoolLeaderwillreferanystudentwhoviolatesthispolicytothestudent'sparentsorguardiansandtothecriminal justiceorjuveniledelinquencysystem.The student may alsobesubjecttodisciplinaryaction,uptoandincludingexpulsion.
ThispolicywillbepublishedannuallyinallSchoolstudentandstaffhandbooks.Publicationisnotapreconditiontoenforcementofthispolicy.

TheBoardbelievesthatasafeandnurturingeducationalenvironmentinschoolisnecessaryforstudentstolearnandachievehighacademicstandards.Therefore,itisthepolicyoftheSchooltoprovideasafeandnurturingenvironmentforallofitsstudents.Appropriatebehavior,treatingotherswithcivilityandrespect,andrefusingtotolerateharassmentorbullyingisexpectedofstudents,aswellasadministrators,faculty,staff,visitors,and volunteers.
BULLYING ANDCYBERBULLYING ARE PROHIBITED
Bullyingandcyberbullyingofastudent,whetherbyotherstudents,staff,visitors,Boardmembers,parents,guests,contractors,vendorsandvolunteers,isprohibited.Allpupilsareprotectedunderthispolicy,andbullyingandcyberbullyingareprohibitedwithoutregardtoitssubjectmatterormotivatinganimus.
DEFINTIONOF BULLYING
"Bullying"meansanywritten,verbal,orphysicalact,oranyelectroniccommunication,including,butnotlimitedto,cyberbullying,thatisintendedorthatareasonablepersonwouldknowislikelytoharmone(1)ormore pupils either directly or indirectly by doing anyof the following:
A.Substantiallyinterferingwiththeeducationalopportunities,benefits,orprogramsofone
(1)or morepupils.
B.Adverselyaffectingtheabilityofapupiltoparticipateinorbenefitfromtheschooldistrict'sorpublicschool'seducationalprogramsoractivitiesbyplacingthepupilinreasonablefearofphysical harm orby causing substantial emotionaldistress.
C.Having an actual andsubstantial detrimental effectona pupil's physicalor mentalhealth.
D.Causingsubstantialdisruptionin,orsubstantialinterferencewith,theorderlyoperationoftheschool.
"Cyberbullying"meansanyelectroniccommunicationthatisintendedorthatareasonablepersonwouldknow is likely toharm one (1)ormore pupils eitherdirectly or indirectly by doing any of the following:
A.Substantiallyinterfering with the educationalopportunities, benefits,or programsofone

Bullyingandcyberbullyingareprohibitedatschool."Atschool"isdefinedasonschoolpremises,atschool-sponsoredactivitiesorevents,inaschool-relatedvehicle,orusingtelecommunicationsaccessdeviceoratelecommunicationsserviceproviderifthetelecommunicationsaccessdeviceortelecommunicationsserviceproviderisownedbyorunderthecontroloftheschooldistrict."Telecommunicationsaccessdevice"and"telecommunicationsserviceprovider" meanthosetermsasdefinedinSection219aoftheMichiganPenalCode(MCL§750.219a).
Bullyingandcyberbullyingthatdoesnotoccur"atschool,"asdefinedabove,butthatcausesasubstantialdisruptiontotheeducationalenvironmentmaybesubjecttodisciplinaryactioninaccordancewiththispolicy and applicable law.
REPORTING AND INVESTIGATING REPORTS OFBULLYING
Everystudentisencouragedtoreportanysituationthatheorshebelievestobebullyingbehaviordirectedtowardastudenttoateacher,acounselor,administrator,orotherstaffmember.Staffmembers shallreportanyreportsmadebystudentsorsituationsthattheybelievetobebullyingbehaviordirectedtowardastudenttotheSchoolLeader.ComplaintsagainsttheSchoolLeadershallbereportedtotheBoard.
Under stateJaw, aschoolemployee,school volunteer,student, or parent or guardian whopromptlyreportsingoodfaithanactofbullyingtotheappropriateschoolofficialdesignatedinthispolicyandwhomakesthisreportincompliancewiththeproceduressetforthinthispolicyisimmunefromacauseofactionfordamagesarisingoutofthereportingitselforanyfailuretoremedythereportedincident.Thisimmunitydoesnotapplytoaschoolofficialresponsibleforimplementingthispolicyorforremedyingthebullying,when acting inthatcapacity.
Retaliationorfalseaccusationagainstatargetofbullying,awitness,oranotherpersonwithinformationaboutanactofbullyingisprohibited.Suspectedretaliationshouldbereportedinthesamemannerassuspectedbullyingbehavior.Makingintentionallyfalseaccusationsofbullyingislikewiseprohibited.Retaliationandmakingintentionallyfalseaccusationsofbullyingmayresultindisciplinaryactionuptoandincluding expulsion.
Allcomplaintsaboutbullyingthatmayviolatethispolicyshallbepromptlyinvestigatedanddocumented.TheSchoolLeaderordesigneeisresponsiblefortheinvestigation.If theinvestigationresultsinafindingthatbullyinghasoccurred,itshallresultinpromptandappropriatedisciplinaryaction,uptoandincludingexpulsionfor students,uptoandincludingdischarge foremployees,and upto andincludingexclusionfromschoolpropertyforparents,guests,volunteers,andcontractors.Individualsmayalsobereferredtolawenforcementofficials.
Where theinvestigation resultsin a findingthat bullyinghasoccurred,both the parent orlegal guardian of avictimofbullyingandtheparentorlegalguardianofaperpetratorofthebullyingshallbenotifiedpromptlyin writing. In addition,administratorsinvestigatingalleged bullying
may notify parents of the victim or perpetrator of bullying sooner thanthe conclusion oftheinvestigationif circumstances dictatesuch earlier notification.
TheSchoolshalldocumentanyprohibitedincidentthatisreportedandshalldocumentallverifiedincidentsofbullyingandtheresultingconsequences,includingtherequirednotificationofparentsorguardians and any discipline andreferrals.
The School Leader isthe school official responsible for ensuring that this policy is implemented.
CONFIDENTIALITY
TheSchoolwillcomplywithallapplicablelawsregarding confidentialityofpersonallyidentifiableinformationwithineducationrecords.Inaddition,theidentityofanindividualwhoreportsanactofbullyingorcyberbullyingshallbeandremainconfidential.TheSchoolLeader,ortheSchoolLeader'sdesignee,shallensurethatthenameofanindividualwhoreportsanactofbullyingorcyberbullyingiswithheldfromtheallegedperpetratorandtheperpetrator'sparent(s},legalguardian(s)andrepresentative(s},andisredactedfromanyreportofbullyingorcyberbullyingthatispublicallydisclosed.
NOTIFICATION
This policy will be annually circulated to parentsand students, and shall be posted ontheSchoolwebsite.
REPORTING
Asrequiredbystatestatute,theSchoolshallprovideareportofallverifiedincidentsofbullyingandotherrequiredinformationtotheMichiganDepartmentofEducationonanannualbasis,accordingtothe form andprocedures established by the Department.
Asrequiredbystatestatute,theSchool'sprocedureswithrespecttobullyingarecontainedwithinthispolicy, and thus no administrativeguidelinesaccompany this policy.

MiddleandHighSchoolSpecialEducationProgram(Grades7-12)Atthemiddleandhighschoollevelspecialeducationstudentsreceiveinstructioninthegeneraleducationsettingbyhighlyqualifiedteachersineligibleareas.Aco-teacher(highlyqualifiedspecial
educationteacher)providesservicetospecialeducationstudentswithinthegeneraleducationsettingaccordingtoeachspecialeducationstudent'sIEP(IndividualizedEducationPlan).

ConsistentwiththeMay2010 Michigan Criteria for ExistenceofaSpecificLearningDisability(SLD), whichisbasedontheIndividualswithDisabilitiesEducation Act (IDEA) federal regulationsact 34 CFR R 300.309andtheMichiganAdministrativeRules forSpecial Education (MARSE) R340.1713,ConnerCreekAcademyEastwillbe followingprocessesfordeterminingtheexistenceofaSpecificLearningDisabilitybasedonthecriteriabelow.
Theprocessesusedwillevaluatethestudent'sresponsetoscientific,research-basedinterventionas well as their pattern of strengthand weaknesses. Astudentisconsideredtardytoclasswhenhe/sheisnotintheclassroomwhenitistimetobeginclass.Studentsareexpected toattend classfully preparedwiththematerialsneededfortheclass.Developingthehabitofpromptnessisnotonlyofgreatvalueinschoolbutisalsoagreathabit.

Falserepresentationofafireorinclementweatheremergencyisaseriousoffense.Notonlyisthisdangerous,butitisalsocostlytotheAcademy.Schoolsarebilledforfalsealarmsandmustpayafee.Anystudentwhoparticipatesinthistypeofactivity,encouragesanotherpersontocauseafalsealarm,orotherwisecausesthestaffandstudentsofConnerCreekAcademyEasttobelievethereisanemergencywhenthereisnot,willbesuspendedandpossiblyexpelledfromtheschool.Parents/guardianswillbealsoberesponsibleforanymonetaryfeesincurredthroughfalsealarms.

TheneatappearanceoftheConnerCreekAcademyEastcampusisofgreatimportance.Ourgoalistohaveacampusthatisclearoflitterandvandalism,acampusthatwilldemonstrateprideandrespectforthefacility.
Textbooks
Textbooksareprovidedforeachstudent.Itistheresponsibilityofthestudenttomaintainhis/herbooksinpropercondition.Attheendoftheyear,textbooksaretobeturnedinwithonlynormalwear.Anyexcessivewearordamagetoabookwillresultinfinancialobligationtotheparent/guardian.
Lost and Found
Allarticlesfound ontheschoolgroundsshouldbeturnedintotheschool office.Thesearticleswillbe placedin the"Lost and Found" boxlocatedinthe hallway outside thelatch key room.Unclaimedarticleswillbediscardedperiodically.
HEALTHINFORMATION
Health Documents
Everystudentmustsubmitacopyofanimmunizationrecordtotheschooloffice.Immunizationsmustbeup-to-date.Studentswithmedicalorreligiousexemptionswillbeexcludedfromschoolintheeventofanoutbreak.Parents/guardiansareaskedtoinformtheschoolofficeofanymedicalconditionorrestrictionthatmayimpactyourchild(ren)whileatschool.
EnrollingKindergartenstudentsmustsubmita"ReportofHealthExaminationforSchoolEntry"datedwithinsixmonthspriortoenteringkindergarten.
Medication
ConnerCreekAcademyEastrequiresparentstomakearrangementswiththeschoolofficetoadministerALLmedications(includingthosesoldoverthecountersuchaschildren'saspirinorTylenol))thatarebroughttotheschool.AparentmustcompleteaMedicationRequestbeforethemedicinecanbeadministered.Medicinemaybegivenbythesecretariesorotherdesignatedpersonnel.Medications areNOT to be keptwiththe student(e.g., in the lunch box,backpacks,etc.).
Screening
Studentsmaybescreenedforvision,andhearingneeds.Resultswillbedocumentedinthestudent'shealthfile.Parentshavetherighttorefuseanyscreening.
Physical Education
StudentsmaybeexcusedfromparticipatinginP.E.and/orrecessunderthefollowingconditions:
1.Onedaywithwrittennotefromhis/herparent(muststaywithclass–excusedfromparticipationonly).
2.Formorethanoneday,parent/guardianmustmeetwiththeP.E.teacherinpersonorbyphoneandhaveadministrativeapproval(muststaywithclass-excusedfromparticipationonly).
3.Thestudentmusthaveawrittenphysician’sorderifnonparticipationisrequestedforanextendedperiod.
Recess
1.RecessforallstudentsingradesK-6iseveryday,weatherpermitting(20degreesorwarmer).
2.Ifyourchildiswellenoughtocometoschooltheyarerequiredtogooutsidewiththeirclass,unlessyouhaveawrittenletterfromyourchild'sphysicianstatingtheycannotbeoutsideduringrecessduetoanillness.
