Entrance Antiphon
Listen, Lord, and answer me. Save your servant who trust in you. I call to you all day long, have mercy on me, O Lord.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 137
Your love, O Lord, is eternal, discard not the word of your hands.
I thank you, Lord, with all my heart,
you have heard the words of my mouth.
Before the angels I will bless you.
I will adore before your holy temple.
I thank you for your faithfulness and love
which excel all we ever knew of you.
On the day I called, you answered;
you increased the strength of my soul.
The Lord is high yet he looks on the lowly
and the haughty he knows from afar.
Your love, O Lord, is eternal,
discard not the word of your hands.
Your love, O Lord, is eternal,
discard not the word of your hands. /
Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia!
God in Christ was reconciling the world to himself,
and he has entrusted to us the news that they are reconciled. Alleluia.
Communion Antiphon
Lord, the earth is filled with your gift from heaven; man grows bread from earth, and wine to cheer his heart.

MASS OBLIGATION
By virtue of our our Baptism, all of us Catholics, share a common membership in the Church. Our membership is expressed in the fullest possible way when we attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation. Holy Days of Obligation are: The Ascension of Our Lord, The Assumption of Our Lady, and the Birth of Our Lord. Missing Mass through one’s own fault on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation is a serious sin. Anyone who has committed serious sin is obliged to confess such sin(s) and receive absolution in the Sacrament of Reconciliation before receiving Holy Communion again. Parents who cause their children to miss Mass also need to confess this.
Saying that we are Catholic means that we belong in a Community of Faith. The Parish Community expresses in the fullest possible way our belonging. Catholics therefore, should always do their best to attend Holy Mass in their Parish Community and to experience, in a very real way, that WE BELONG.

Twenty-First Sunday of the Year Year A24 August 2014
Commentary Anthony Cassidy
First Reading (Isaiah 22: 19-23)
The precise reasons for the demotion of Shebna, the second highest official in the royal civil service, are not clear; but he has obviously failed seriously in his duties, which are now solemnly and publicly transferred to Eliakim, who, it is hoped and expected, will exercise his authority for the benefit of the people of Jerusalem and Judah, rather than for his own. The new minister will be ‘a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem’, a relationship implying trust and loyalty, and is used elsewhere of Joseph to Pharaoh (Gen 45:8), and Deborah is described as being ‘a mother to Israel’ (Jdgs 5:7).
The power of the keys in this context refers to the official’s controlling access to the House of David, literally to the royal palace, and hence to the presence of the king. Access to the royal presence was especially important for those who felt that, as victims of injustice, the king would take up their cause.
Gospel (Matthew 16: 16-20)
Matthew adds a considerable amount of material to Mark’s simple version of Peter’s confession – ‘You are the Christ.’ In this account, Peter’s declaration is presented as valid because it comes as a result of direct revelation from God, not as, possibly, the mistaken conclusion based on Jesus’ power to work miracles. This is the basis for Peter’s being blessed, called the solid foundation of the Church, and given special authority. Matthew sees the Church as an interim institution, which serves until the full establishing of the Kingdom of Heaven, and Jesus gives Peter the responsibility of admitting or excluding people by the symbolic use of the keys.
The giving of a new name indicates a new role for a person. Simon becomes Peter, just as Saul becomes Paul in Acts. There are indications of tensions within Matthew’s community of Jewish and Gentile Christians, and it may be that Peter had a special position in the tradition of that Church, perhaps as an authority to whom later teachers could appeal, just as rabbis would cite respected predecessors in order to justify their opinions on religious matters.
