University Committee for General Education Annual Report : 2016-17
Diane Prorak, Chair
The University Committee for General Education (UCGE) met 13 times during the 2016-17 academic year. The membership list is included.Below are the highlights of what we accomplished this past year:
- Approved 16 new ISEM301 courses and recommended re-submission next year (with revisions) of 1 more. Instructors presented course proposals to the committee, and, in many cases, constructive revisions were suggested by the committee.
- Approved 4 senior experience courses.
- Approved 2 Core Science courses.
- Approved 2 courses to be added to the Social Sciences requirement list.
- Approved 2 courses for the International requirement list.
- Discussed the current status and future of UI General Education in a meeting with Provost Wiencek.
- Received regular General Education status and enrollment reports from Director Kenton Bird. This included discussion on seats needed in order for students to successfully fulfill GenEd requirements, advising for students who postpone taking ISEM courses and online sections to help students complete courses.
- Met with representatives from the International Programs Office to discuss and ultimately approve a streamlined policy and process for credit-bearing international experiences to satisfy the International course requirement.
- Discussed draft proposal on revising General Education requirements for transfer students. UCGE agreed that there should be catalog language requiring all students entering the institution with 26 credits or less to complete all University of Idaho General Education requirements. Students transferring to the institution with more than 58 credits would be exempt from ISEM 101, but would be required to complete ISEM 301, a Senior Experience course, and fulfill the 36-credit general education requirement. They would be exempt from the International and American Diversity requirements. The committee will need to vote on proposed catalog language reflecting this decision next academic year as well as determine General Education requirements for students entering with between 26 and 58 credits.
- Discussed needs for General Education assessment and interfaced with General Education Assessment Committee (GEAC). We reviewed a survey GEAC designed for GEM course instructors on GEM competencies. We also approved some changes to the function of GEAC.
