Differences between Classifications of the field of studies used in the 1989 and 1999 censuses

I. Classification of the field of studies used

in the 1989 population census

In the 1989 census, four different classifications have been used to code the field of studies for the question 9b - “ The highest qualification has the person got”. They are the following:

i). Classification of the filed of studies for persons who had a higher than graduate qualification;

ii). Classification of the filed of studies for persons who had a undergraduate and graduate qualification;

iii). Classification of the filed of studies for persons who had a secondary vocational qualification;

iv). Classification of the filed of studies for persons who had a technical worker certificate;

The code of the first three classifications “i”, “ii” and “iii” has the similar structure. The code comprises 5 digits divided into 3 levels, first level contains one digit, second level contains two digits and third level contains 2 digits.

The code of the last classification “iv” comprises 5 digits divided into three levels, first level contains two digits, second level contains one digit and third level contains 2 digits.

It should be noted the following for the above-mentioned classification:

·  The two undergradute and graduate are used one classification;

·  It is might be that the one field of study of the different level of the qualification would have the different code in the different classification.

II. Classification of the field of studies

used in the 1999 population and housing census

During the preparation stage of the 1999 census, developing the classification of the filed of studies was going on. But it can not be released this classification officially, the General Statistical Office had published it temporarily to use for the 1999 census.

The classification of the field of studies used for the 1999 census was designed for seven levels of qualifications. They are following: technical worker with certificate, secondary vocational, undergraduate, graduate, master, assistant Ph. D and Ph. D. The same name of the field of studies have the same code, if this code is existed for the certain type of the qualification (see Table 1).

The code of the classification of the field of studies comprises six digits divided into three levels as follows: first level contains 2 digits, second level contains 2 digits and third level contains 2 digits.

The first level of the code is no need to be coded and entered. The reason is that the type of qualification is decided by question 13. Additionally, doing this way to economy physical resource. So, the 6-digit codes of the field of studies were stored in the 4-digit fields as follows: first two digits for second level and last two digits for third level of the codes[1].

For each type of qualification, there are not all codes being existed. In the Table 1, the blank shell where the row (row i, for example) and the column (column j, for example) are crossed says that, the field of study written in that row (row i) is not existed for the type of the qualification described in the mentioned column (column j). There are number of the blank shells in the table, so after the completion of data entry, the checking program was run to ensure that, for the each type of qualification, only the correct field of studies of this type of qualification are existed.
