Center for Montessori Teacher Education – Early Childhood Program

The Center for Montessori Teacher Education offers the following accredited program which, upon successful completion leads to an American Montessori Society (AMS) Early Childhood or Associate Early Childhood Credential. An Associate Credential is granted if the candidate does not have a Bachelor’s Degree. Non-AMS accredited Montessori teachers with a college degree may obtain an AMS credential by working with the Center through a special certification program.

This course presents the Montessori philosophy, theory, teaching and strategies in the light of modern child development and developmental psychology.

TIME SCHEDULE:

In the initial summer phase, the student is introduced to Montessori philosophy and child development, observation skills and classroom management: Pivotal knowledge for this program. The didactic materials and exercises for Everyday Living are taught in this phase. The lessons in Sensorial, Language and Math are started at this time. In the 10 monthly weekend seminars that follow, the student is given the basic lessons in a sequence timed to the development of a usual Montessori class. The didactic materials and exercises for sensorial activities, language development, growth of analytical and mathematical thinking, geography, art, movement, music and the natural sciences are presented in full sequence with the rationale behind these materials explained.

There is a strong emphasis on supervised practice sessions to enable the students to become proficient in the use of materials and for them to experience different teaching styles of various Montessori teachers.

The result of our time schedule and the sequence of curriculum presentations is that the student is given an ample opportunity for assimilating all of the information given. The year-long format allows an individual to implement and use their new knowledge in environment settings and to return frequently for encouragement and communication with faculty and fellow students. We have found this to be both a productive and cohesive experience.

LOCATION:

The program will be held at The New School, Inc., a Montessori Center for Children located near Raleigh, North Carolina. The Center offers a peaceful atmosphere in a country setting. Students find this conducive to concentrated study and meditation.

PRACTICUM PHASE:

(INTERNSHIP)

“The function of the Practicum Phase is to provide for the student a supervised teaching and learning experience and a period of observation, internalization, and further study, to bring together the theory and practice of Montessori education.” (AMS Practicum Booklet)

The well defined practicum is a school year of student teaching in a classroom of 3, 4 and 5 year olds, where the student can experience the healthy growth and development of the children and the class. Internship sites are available throughout the United States. The student works with guidance of an AMS certified teacher in an approved Montessori school. The student negotiates the stipend for the year with the practicum site. During this time the student takes an active role as an evolving professional in a half-day class as an observer, participant and implementer.

During the year an area representative of the Center will serve as a supportive Consulting Teacher and classroom observer of the student. Our monthly seminars offer frequent contact with program staff and the opportunity for discussion and feedback with fellow interns and other Montessorians. The Center works closely with each student, the school, Supervising Teacher and Consulting Teacher so as to provide a complete and through educational experience.
