President’s Report

The 2014 2015 season was the third season for our club since the merger of East Malvern and Tooronga District cricket clubs. The merger has been a great success with outstanding results now being achieved on and off the field. I believe we can say with authority that we are now truly “one club” and we are beginning to achieve the goals set at the time of the merger.

On the field our club enjoy our most successful season in 2014 2015 winning a club record six premierships across its junior, senior and female cricket teams.

The club achieved its first premierships in the ECA with premierships in E Turf and LOC 6. In addition the club won its first premiership in the top MCA Sunday Turf competition.

Two of our junior sides went to back to back with the U16 Girls side and U13A Boys sides again winning premierships in the SDCCL. The U13C Boys side also won the premiership convincingly.

The clubs policy of promoting and developing its junior cricketers is bearing great dividends with younger players in the senior teams making significant contributions to their premiership success. We also had a record number of junior players being selected in SDCCL representative teams. A great endorsement of the clubs junior cricket programme led by Stephen Smith and the parents who assist Stephen.

Special congratulations to Will Sutherland and Blake Parsons for being selected to play with the Victorian U16 side in the national championships. Following these championships Will was selected in the Australian U16 side. A magnificent achievement and honour for Will.

The 2014 2015 season was my first season as President of our club. I was conscious of the fact that I had not been directly involved in the club in an official capacity with the club before so I spent the large majority of the season observing, listening and learning about the workings of our club. There are so many positives about the EMTCC which give me great confidence that we continue grow and develop our club into the future.

The Goals that the committee set for the club are –

  • To be the community cricket club of choice in the City of Stonnington for junior and senior cricketers and their families.
  • Provide a vibrant and professional environment where our players can enjoy their cricket and develop their skills.
  • Provide a pathway for our junior players to transition into senior cricket.
  • Continue the promotion and development of female cricket within the club.

We are focused on continuous improvement and future proofing our club. Initiatives in place for the upcoming 2015 2016 season are –

  • Finalise the redevelopment plans for the Dunlop Pavilion.
  • Introduction of a more structured and professional coaching programme across our junior and senior teams.
  • More communication throughout the club.
  • Focus on Female cricket development.
  • Attracting new players to the club.
  • Build on the success of the Friday night Milo In2 and T20 Blast programme.
  • Focus on events and fundraising across the club.
  • Develop our relationships with our community partners and sponsors.
  • Further engage with our past players and life members.

To achieve these goals and initiatives we will need support across every level of the club.

I would ask everyone in the club to support and contribute to the club in whatever capacity they can.

In saying this I would like to personally thank the very dedicated and passionate group of people who support the club both on and after field. From our Committee members through to our junior team managers and coaches to the volunteers in the canteen on Friday nights, you all have made a significant contribution to the success of the 2014 2015 season.

My special thanks to the following people –

  • All our club sponsors with particular thanks to our major sponsor the East Malvern Community Bank branch of the Bendigo Bank.
  • City of Stonnington for their co-operation and assistance in providing the grounds and facilities in outstanding condition.
  • All the committee members with special thanks to Darren Buckley, Shane Smith and Ross Sudano who have stepped down for next season.
  • Mike Fogarty for his support and continued hard work for the club.
  • Matt Garrett for his passion and enthusiasm on and off the field as our club coach.

I am looking forward to another great season for the club in 2015 / 2016.

Yours in cricket

Campbell MacKintosh

Coaches Season Review 2014/15

Where do I start this review? I know. With the five new Premierships won by the EMTCC. Congratulations to all players who played in our ECA:E Turf, ECA:LOC 6 One Day, and the MCA:B Senior Cricket Teams, as well as the SDCCL:Under13C Friday and SDCCL:Under 13A Sunday Junior Cricket Teams.

However it also needs to be mentioned the tireless efforts by all of the Club, who regardless of whether or not you played in a winning Premiership, assisted in playing games throughout the season, and allowed those winning teams the opportunity to fight it out in Finals. Whether that was at training, or helping out by getting a mate to fill in for a game. Thank You.

There were many great performances throughout the season. 9 Centurions (Nick Peel 3, Brett Ryan 2, Matt Garratt 1, Walter Hawkins 1, Rory Stewart 1, Sam Gleeson 1). And some great performances with the ball - Mark Burnett 31 wickets (MCA:D Sunday) Eric Maillard 29 wickets(ECA:E Turf), Tom Sudano 23 wickets,(MCA:B Sunday), Andrew Chau 21 wickets (MCA:B Sunday), Tim Stewart 20 wickets (MCA:C Sunday) and David Simpson 20 wickets (MCA:D Sunday).

One question I would like all whom played for the EMTCC in Season 2014/15 is, “Am I happy with how I performed this Season”. If the answer is yes, congratulations, you were able to practice, and then transfer those skills into the middle, where it counted. If your answer is no, and looking at the statistics, there are more no’s than yes’s, then you need to ask yourself another question. “Did I do everything in my power to give myself every opportunity to perform at the highest level I could”. I know as Coach/Player, I did everything I possibly could to get every ounce of ability out of myself. This was done by training two nights a week. Making sure my fitness was at a level, that allowed me to perform for my 10 other team mates on a Saturday.

Coming into the 2015/16 Season, a decision needs to be made. Do you want to play at the highest level that you are able to achieve, or do you want to play Social cricket. Either way the EMTCC are happy to have you play for our great Club this Season. You then need to decide what am I prepared to do to get to where I want to go. Am I going to train two nights a week, or one. Am I going to play on a Saturday, or a Sunday, or both, where available. And the most important question. Am I prepared to sacrifice my weekends to play for the EMTCC? Not just play a game and then have a game off. A full Season playing with my mates.

This season is going to be another exciting chapter in the history of the EMTCC. With new players coming on board, the opportunities to play in the same team you played in Season 2014/15 get even tougher, and this puts even more emphasis on getting to training.

Pre Season starts on the 26th July at Hawthorn Indoor. Get on down and start honing those skills. With some pre season Practice matches to start soon, every effort will be given to those who show they want to play. I look forward to seeing you there.

1ST ELEVEN REPORT:MATT GARRATT

Again the First XI had an up and down Season. We started well against Glen Iris who had come down from Senior Turf, and after posting 6/265 it was easy to get excited about what the Season ahead had in store for us. But we started slowly, which always makes it hard to stay in touch with the top half of the competition. At Xmas we headed into the break 2 wins, 1 draw and 3 losses.

The best performance for the Season was easily the run chase against Old Carey. With Old Carey making 291 the first week, and then turning up the second week, with a wet deck, and then chasing down the runs with one wicket in hand, and valuable contributions by the bottom 5. Ben Gerloff 64, Josh Knight 31 n.o, Maurice Quigley 15, Xavier Saunders 9 and Jacob Quigley 3. The last few batsmen may not look much in the way of runs, but when the bottom 5 take the score from 172 to the winning runs of 294. As a Captain there can be no bigger pride than having your team take what looks like an unwinnable position and turn it into a win for the Team. A valuable lesson learnt by all that day, that you are never out of the game until that tenth wicket falls.

After Xmas we dropped a game against the bottom team, and this is where the First XI has to improve. We need to bury the bottom teams, and win, and give ourselves every opportunity to play amongst the top teams in the competition. We would win one more game for the Season and finish with 3 wins, 1 draw and 7 losses. Not good figures in any language.

There were games we should of won, against Ashwood and Richmond City, and games we should of be more competitive against, such as Boronia and Donvale.

Again a frustrating year, however there are great signs moving into 2015/16. The emergence of Ben Gerloff as a First XI Keeper. Walter Hawking hitting his maiden century. Maiden First XI games for Josh Knight, Peter Knight, Tom Sudano, Seb Graham, Joel Matheson, Jack MacKintosh and Jacob Quigley.

With the potential of some new blood coming into the First XI, it makes for great competition for spots, which is always good for the Club. I look forward to what we can achieve in 2015/16. Get on Board!!!

2ND ELEVEN REPORT:MARK YOUNG

The 2nd XI had a very good season; and with 7 wins and a draw in 11 games (for 45 points) were extremely unlucky not to play in the finals. There were many highlights throughout the season, including a win against the top side in the last round of the regular season. This was a must win game for EMTCC and the team performed great (particularly the bowlers) against a team that would eventually win the grade - in fact, their defeat by EMTCC was their only loss of the season. Other highlights included chasing 287 against Richmond City, scoring 375 at Mulgrave and twice (vs Hawthorn and Ashwood) chasing down reasonable targets whilst only losing two wickets.

Individually there were also many highlights in the season. A number of young developing players performed very well in the C Turf team and were rewarded with chances in the 1st XI. Jack MacKintosh, Josh Knight and Jacob Quigley, for example, all provided great contributions to the team. A number of more seasoned professionals also delivered good performances for the 2nd XI. Some of these players were dealing with rejection from the 1st XI, but were given confidence and the opportunity to regain form and push for selection again in the top side. Centuries to Sam Gleeson, Rory Stewart and Jason Smith all set up very good victories.

Finally, great 'clubmen' who are often forgotten by selectors and coaches, formed the core of the 2nd XI team and made it a great place to play cricket every Saturday. Darren Buckley and Dan Jarvis not only provided key, mature performances at important stages of the season, they also create a great environment off the field and coach the youngsters (and some not so young) on the ground. Brett Cranage is arguable the most team-focused keeper in the club. Always chatting in the field, positive in his outlook and endeavouring to make others perform at a greater standard, whilst fielding.

Having scraped to finish 3rd bottom in 2014/15, to finish equal with 3rd top in 2014/15 is a great improvement and bodes well for the coming season.

Cheers

Mark
