“Keeping Respectful” (Demonstrating respect)
STATE STANDARD: III
ESSENTIAL ACTIVITY: Video: Real Kids-What We Learned About Bullying(15 m.)
Video: You Can Count on Me! Building Character (15 min.)
EXTENDED ACTIVITIES:
· “Respectful Secret Friends”. Students are secretly and randomly assigned a “Respected Secret Friend”. Students are to perform 3 acts of kindness for another person
· Morning announcements include a tip on being respectful
· Create classroom rules and discuss the role of rules in generating an environment of respect
· School/classroom adoption of a school neighbor(s) for whom acts of service/kindness are performed
· On monthly lunch calendar print the theme of the month and include at least one tip for being respectful

OCTOBER
“Keeping Safe & Drug Free”
STATE STANDARD: I, II, III
ESSENTIAL ACTIVITY: Video: Bicycle Safety: Zone of Danger(14 min. 45 sec.)
EXTENDED ACTIVITIES:
· Assemblies/classroom demonstrations of bicycle safety, pedestrian safety, and seatbelts by law enforcement agencies
· Review Halloween safety
· Presentations on bus safety with transportation department personnel
· Demonstrations of safety around power lines by the power company
· Morning announcements include a safety tip
· Morning announcements include a tip for staying drug free
· Red Ribbon Week activities
· Presentations on dealing appropriately with strangers
· School emphasis on practice of fire drill, earthquake, and lockdown procedures
· Presentations on canal safety
· Attend the INL Science Expo (last part of September or early October)

“Keeping Healthy” (Hygiene and disease prevention)
STATE STANDARD: I, II
ESSENTIAL ACTIVITY: Video: Bacteria: Friends or Enemies (24 min.)
EXTENDED ACTIVITIES:
· Demonstrations of hand washing (see Mrs. Anita Gianotto (INL) or health professional for demonstration of hand washing and application of chemical to show left behind dirt and germs)
· Bulletin board display of absences (due to illness) for the months of November, December, and January for the past 5 years along with a graph for the current year’s absences. Perhaps, offer an incentive for reduced absences due to illness. Promote hand washing, use of Kleenex and staying home when contagious. Send home parent fliers reminding parents of germ prevention ideas and emphasize keeping sick students home
· Morning announcements include a hygiene tip/reminder
· School-wide celebration of perfect first trimester attendance
· School-wide poster contest promoting hygiene
· On monthly lunch calendar print the theme of the month and include at least one tip for preventing disease

DECEMBER-JANUARY
“Keeping Informed” (Healthy products and information)
STATE STANDARD: IV
ESSENTIAL ACTIVITY: Video: Life Skills 101-Media Wise (15 min.)
EXTENDED ACTIVITIES:
· Display signs and posters of local agencies (Red Cross, Poison Control, other assistance agencies)
· Display case of healthy products with large size posters depicting information on labels
· Display harmful/toxic products common to the home with posters showing proper use and disposal
· First aid demonstrations by local fire department
· Morning announcements include information about an agency or product
· Christmas Tree safety presentations
· Winter safety presentations
· Promote the community program “Give Kids a Smile” (program to provide low cost dental care to underprivileged students)
· On monthly lunch calendar print the theme of the month and include at least one tip for reading product labels or information such as the Poison Control phone number or information regarding other community available resources

FEBRUARY

ESSENTIAL ACTIVITY: Video: Don’t Pop Your Cork on Monday (13 min.)

EXTENDED ACTIVITIES:
· Second step presentations by school counselors
· Attend IFHS Multicultural activities
· Morning announcements include a tip on expressing your emotions
· Emphasize expressing gratitude: write thank you letters for Valentine’s Day gifts
· Emphasize saying “please” and “thank you” during the school day
· Invite speakers to present information about different cultures. Include speakers representing handicapped people
· Announcements by the principal recognizing acts of kindness performed by students
· Promote the Jump Rope for Heart program
· School-wide celebration of 2nd Trimester perfect attendance

ESSENTIAL ACTIVITY: Video: Body Systems (23 min.)
EXTENDED ACTIVITIES:
· Fifth and Sixth grade classes watch and discuss the grade level appropriate growth and development films
· Display models of the skeleton, heart, lungs, etc.
· Presentations by health care professionals
· Morning announcements include body trivia/facts
· See the Health Handbook in the Harcourt Science textbook
· Dental care presentations by local dentists
· On monthly lunch calendar print the theme of the month and include at least one piece of trivia regarding the body

“Keeping Balanced” (Managing stress)
STATE STANDARD: V
ESSENTIAL ACTIVITY: Video: What to Do About Anger? (34 min.)
EXTENDED ACTIVITIES:
· Classroom discussions/demonstrations of ways to manage stress. Use school counselors to do this
· Have school-wide “stress-buster” activities. Use these especially before the beginning of ISAT testing
· Morning announcements include a stress management tip
· Arrange canal safety presentations
· Celebrate “Earth Day”
· On monthly lunch calendar print the theme of the month and include at least one tip for managing stress

MAY
“Keeping Fit” (Fitness and nutrition)
STATE STANDARD: I
ESSENTIAL ACTIVITY: Video: Food, Energy, and You (20 min.)
EXTENDED ACTIVITIES:
· Recess lap walking with incentives
· Performance by Rexburg Rope-jumping team or similar groups
· Display Food Pyramid posters or other eye-catching bulletin boards
· School-wide “Healthy Snack Day(s)”. School or student provided snacks on a couple of given Friday afternoons
· Train weekly for the Presidential Physical Fitness Award
· Family Fitness Night
· “Walk to School Week” Encourage students and parents to walk to school each day rather than drive. Form “Walking groups” for students with accompanying parent volunteers
· Organize recess games such as kickball, relays, touch football, soccer, basketball, playground games, etc. Use teachers or parent volunteers
· Morning announcement includes a fitness/nutrition tip
· Tasting parties
· Promote “Field Day” and District 6th Grade Track Meet activities
· See local fitness trainers to make presentations regarding fitness
