Urgent Recall forUndeclaredAllergens

A variety of Zingerman's Bakehouse products (refer to the list that you received on Monday, November 5, 2012) distributed prior to 11/2/2012 do not identify the source of butter and cream ingredients as milk and the source of the flour ingredient as wheat. Products were also found with undeclared soy. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk, wheat or soy allergen, run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products. Consumers with sensitivities to these allergens should not consume these products.

Customers who have purchased one of these packaged pastry with an improper label may return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

If you have any product not labeled correctly or hold any product which is not labeled correctly please contact us and hold it for correction.

Zingerman’s Bakehouse staff have visited your store and put corrective labels on all implicated product. (On or between Friday, November 2, 2012 and Wednesday, November 7, 2012 our staff have either amended or switched all of the labels on all packaged pastries that were sold since October 19, 2012.)

Starting November 3, 2012 we have changed the labels on our entire line of packaged pastries to comply with the new allergen formatting required by the FDA.

Our label’s list all ingredients but did not identify the allergens by their common name (milk, wheat, soy). The old labels weren’t formatted to specifically declare the allergen in addition to listing it as an ingredient. Our new labels fully comply with this FDA requirement.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

This problem with our labels was brought to our attention last Friday, November 2, 2012 during a routine FDA inspection.

If you have any questions, please contact Frank Carollo or Amy Emberling, owners of Zingerman’s Bakehouse, at 734.761.7255.
