The Ideal City Project

Introduction

Chances are you live in a city or in an outlying area with strong ties to the city. Those who live in them take cities for granted; but cities are one of humanity's most complex and sophisticated forms of social organization.

In this project you will plan and design your own city. The 6 parts of this assignment are:

I. Planning Table

II. Site Location

III. Design Infrastructure

IV. Choose Services

V. Determine Goals for your city

VI. Design your city

Your final project can take one of several forms:

·  Your Ideal City can be a three-dimensional model. With the use of recycled materials from wood, cardboard and paper to plastic, aluminum and textiles.

·  Your Ideal City can be drawn on tracing paper in the form of an architect’s or planner’s schematic, with a key to all the major elements you’ve included in the design.

·  Your Ideal City can be a written report, describing the important features of your city and an explanation of why they’re there, where/why they are located in certain areas and how they work.

·  Your Ideal City can be presented in a PowerPoint.

·  Your Ideal City can be a mixture of the above.

You will be provided with six different readings that will discuss various aspects of cities from the history of cities to solving their problems. You will be required to read the passages and answer any questions that follow (in short answer form). You will use the information found in each section to guide you in creating your Ideal City.
