Job Summary:

Under direction, assists in providing instruction and supervision of student color guards, drill teams and marching units in the band program; maintains band and color guard uniforms and equipment; provides general clerical assistance to the Music Department.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assists students for the purpose of providing instruction and supervision regarding marching techniques, formations and execution of drills.
  • Assists band program and Music Department for the purpose of providing support and backup of assignments; coordinating activities (i.e. clerical support, travel arrangements, fund raising activities, and maintenance of various records and files, etc.)
  • Assists with student selection for the purpose of acquiring the most qualified students for the various units participating in the band program.
  • Designs uniforms and equipment for the purpose of providing students with necessary materials.
  • Develops original material for band/color guard equipment, choreography and formations for the purpose of providing instruction and preparation for presentation and competitive events.
  • Maintains equipment and uniforms for the purpose of ensuring availability of necessary items in safe operating condition.
  • Provides instruction for the purpose of informing students about specialized equipment (i.e. flags, standards, rifles, etc.)
  • Travels to various band program events for the purpose of providing support and assistance.

Other Job Functions:

  • Assists teacher for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and general requirements of teaching; and, maintenance of attendance records.
  • Confers with teachers for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information.
  • Maintains library of printed music for the purpose of maintaining information and availability of materials.

Essential Job Requirements - Qualifications:

  • Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required: Skill to motivate students in music. Skill in communicating with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds. Skill to perform basic clerical functions, perform basic math calculations, operate standard office equipment, use English in verbal and written form, use correct grammar, punctuation and spelling. Knowledge of principles of child development, instructional processes. Knowledge of the basic creative aspects of show design including body, equipment and formations. Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods, perform a variety of specialized and responsible tasks. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students and other school personnel.
  • Physical Requirements: The Office of Classified Personnel Services embraces the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The requirements of the position are maintained in the Personnel Department; and, individuals shall be able to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Education and Training Required: High school graduate or equivalent and one (1) year demonstrated experience working with youth in an organized setting and two (2) years increasingly responsible experience working or performing with drill teams, color guards or marching bands. Completion of two (2) years of higher education study OR possession of an Associate’s or higher level degree, OR pass assessment that demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching reading, writing, and mathematics OR reading, writing, and mathematics readiness.
    NOTE: Incumbents hired prior to January 8, 2002 will have until January 8, 2006 to comply with the college or assessment requirements.

  • Physical Abilities – Hear and speak clearly and distinctly to provide assistance and information related to classroom assignments; see to monitor student conduct during learning activities; manipulate hands and fingers to operate audio-visual, duplicating and educational training equipment; bend at the waist, stoop and kneel to assist students; and stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required:
  • Successful completion of the State-mandated proficiency examination.
  • Fingerprint/criminal justice clearance.
  • Tuberculosis clearance.
  • Current First Aide and CPR Certificate
