Wakefield Sea Cadets Celebrate as National Champions

Local youngsters win Gold in Regatta

Teenagers from Wakefield Sea Cadets are celebrating today after competing at the National Regatta in London and winning gold to become the National Sea Cadet Champions, despite not having a sea cadet unit at which to train.

Ordinary Cadet Paige, 15, Able Cadet Johanna, 16, Able Cadet Jodie, 16, Ordinary Cadet Lydia, 14, Able Cadet Rhianna, 16, and Cadet Isobel, 13, competed in the Rowing Trinity 500 Open Girls class, having won their place in the nationals earlier this year by coming first in the District and then Area competitions. Facing the best Sea Cadet teams from across the country, the girls took first place and were named National Champions at the regatta which was held at the Excel Centre at Royal Victoria Dock, London.

Adding to the unit’s success was Cadet 1st Class Niamh, 15, who came third nationally, scooping bronze in the Yole Open Single Female class. Cadet 1st Class Lewis, 14, competing in the Yole Open Single Male also performed tremendously well against stiff competition to come fifth in the country.

The result is even more remarkable given the cadets’ unit is still unusable since Boxing Day when the floods swamped their building based on Thornes Lane.

Commanding Officer Jean Pickering said: “This is a fantastic achievement by our young people in what has been a very difficult year so far for Wakefield Sea Cadets. We have not been able to use our building since it flooded on Boxing Day, which has made training much more challenging.

“We’re very grateful to Standbridge Community Centre which offered us the use of their building to enable us to continue running the cadet unit, but the floods have had a big impact on our training time on the water.”

Commenting on the future of the unit’s building, Jean added: “There is still considerable outstanding repair work to be done and enhancements to try and improve the building before we can move back, however we are hoping to be able to make use of the building again in the next few weeks.”

Additional advice:

1.)Leave double spaces between paragraphs. This allows a journalist to make notes on the page. The points the article is making will also appear clearer.

2.)Write in the third person and never use “I”, “we” or “you” unless it’s a quote.

3.)Use an easily readable font, such as Arial, Calibri or Times New Roman.

4.)When e-mailing the press release to journalists, use the headline as the e-mail’s subject.

5.)Some mailboxes will block attachments, therefore it’s important to copy and paste the text into the body of the e-mail.

6.)Either shortly before or after sending the press release, phone the newsdesk or journalist to pitch and sell its value.

7.)Including images in the body of a Word document is likely to reduce their resolution. Send them as separate attachments or include a downloadable link, such as WeTransfer or DropBox.

8.)Be sure to describe what the pictures signify and who is in them (see the example we’ve provided above).
