INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Gardening and Environmental Education Internship

Basic Function:The Garden and Environmental Education Intern is responsible for the design and implementation of gardening programs at various sites. This position reports directly to the Unit Director or Program Manager.

Internship Responsibilities:

  • Design and maintain an organic vegetable garden.
  • Design and facilitate various gardening programs and activities using a specified gardening curriculum to educate youth on gardening techniques and other environmental topics.
  • Promote and stimulate interest and participation in program activities by members, their families and volunteers.
  • Assist with collaborative projects with schools and other community partners to provide a variety of garden programming.
  • Know and use positive youth guidance techniques including, but not limited to, positive role modeling, conflict resolution and positive discipline.
  • Work to achieve the mission of the organization.
  • Involve children in all parts of the gardening process (i.e planting, weeding, watering and harvesting).
  • Able to job shadow other staff at Boys & Girls Clubs.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of and experience with growing a vegetable garden.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team.
  • Demonstrates ability to relate well with children in a Boys & Girls Club.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work well with youth and families from diverse backgrounds.
  • Interest in environmental education, culinary arts, nutrition, and/or sustainability projects.
  • Ability to be flexible, adaptable and willing to seek new ideas.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.

Program Hours Available:

School Year Hours: Club: 1 PM to 9 PM Monday-Friday

KIDSTOP: 2 PM to 6 PM Monday-Friday

Summer Hours: Club: 12 PM to 6 PM Monday-Friday

KIDSTOP: 7 AM to 6 PM Monday-Friday

*Intern schedule will vary depending on site need and intern availability

***A stipend in the amount of $300 will be allotted to those interns able to complete 300 or more hours during the course of the semester.
