The Boise National Forest will soon be filling 2permanent-seasonal (18/8) GS-462-6/7 Forestry Technician positions in the silviculture shop. One position will be locatedon the EmmettRanger District and one on the Cascade Ranger District. The duty stations will be located in Cascade and Emmett, Idaho. Transfer of station funds are not available for these positions.

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower level in the federal service is required. Specialized experience is experience, which is directly related to the position to be filled, and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Duties:Resolves a full range of irregular or problem situations encountered when performing a wide variety of nonstandard technical tasks or assignments pertaining to timber stand improvements (TSI) or reforestation operations. Develops a schedule and work plans for monitoring and inspecting these activities. Performs reforestation and stocking surveys in accordance with established procedures to determine planting needs, need for site preparation, plantation conditions, and seedling survival. Performs TSI surveys to determine stand condition and the need for TSI treatments, such as precommercial thinning, mistletoe treatment, pruning and fertilization, etc.
Coordinates with Forest and District Silviculturists to determine site preparation and planting needs, schedule annual and out year planting targets, develop planting contracts, schedule annual survey needs, order tree seedlings, etc.
Collects technical data needed to prescribe stand treatment. Measurements include radial growth, basal area, site index, stand density, stand condition, common stand exam, etc. May use a data recorder in the field. Assists with data entry and processing, including updating the FSVeg and FACTS databases.
Serves as Contracting Officer's Representative (COR) or inspector on reforestation, site preparation, timber stand improvement, stand exam, and tree improvement service contract projects. Develops service contracts and writes supplemental specifications to fit site-specific project situations. Ensures all provisions are enforced and proper measures are taken to protect or enhance values in accordance with contract objectives. Prepares and submits inspection reports, checks for compliance on needed corrective actions, and recommends final acceptance of the contract upon completion.
May require working from a remote work station on a frequent basis.
May lead or supervise seasonal crews performing reforestation or timber stand improvement work.

ABOUT THE FOREST: The Boise National Forest includes about 2,612,000 acres of National Forest lands located north and east of the city of Boise, Idaho. Intermingled within the Forest are 348,000 acres of land either privately owned or administered by the State of Idaho, or other federal agencies. The Supervisor’s Office is located in Boise, Idaho, with district offices located at Emmett, Mountain Home, Lowman, Idaho City and Cascade, Idaho.

Most of the land supports an evergreen forest that includes pure or mixed stands of ponderosa pine, grand fir, Douglas-fir, Engelmann spruce, lodgepole pine and subalpine fir. The Forest contains large numbers of big game species, such as mule deer and Rocky Mountain elk. Trout are native to most streams and lakes, while anadromous salmon and steelhead inhabit the Salmon River and its many tributaries.

EMMETT DISTRICT: Much of the Emmett District lies within the Idaho Batholith, a large and highly erodible geologic formation. Through uplift, faulting, and subsequent dissection by hydrologic action, a mountainous landscape has developed. Elevations on the forest range from 2,600 to 9,800 feet. The major river systems on the Boise National Forest are the Boise and Payette Rivers and the South and Middle Fork drainages of the Salmon River. The average annual precipitation ranges from 15 inches at lower elevations to 70 inches at higher elevations.

CASCADE DISTRICT: The Cascade Ranger District is the northernmost District on the Boise National Forest. Encompassing over 400,000 acres, the District offers a diverse resource management program including recreation, wildlife, fisheries, forest and range management, and watershed management. The small town of Cascade is nestled in the mountains of central Idaho approximately 75 miles north of Boise on Highway 55. It is located in Long Valley between the North Fork of the Payette River and Cascade. The Cascade Ranger District offers abundant and diverse year-round outdoor sports and recreation opportunities.
