EXPERIENCE
/I am a “team” player with good communication skills. I have been in this industry for almost 30 years, 25+ as a member of Local 18. I am a graduate from our apprentice program. I have plan reading experience, and experience with planning and scheduling materials. I have also used that experience to problem solve in the field to keep a project moving. I have worked with construction supervision as well as Union officials to resolve issues as they arise. I have been Union Steward on several projects. I have worked with countless apprentices on work ethic and safe and productive operation of several pieces of machinery
My career began in 1986, I worked for Setterlin Construction Co. of Columbus. At the same time I attended The Ohio State University. Setterlin Co. is a building contractor for large distribution buildings, shopping malls and stores. While at Setterlin I performed tasks related to carpentry, concrete, cement and masonry as well as labor. Setterlin is a non-union contractor, though the operators belong to the union. We had several cranes, back hoes, forklifts, skid steers and more, I thought this is what I want to do. The operators on that job steered me toward the apprenticeship program. One of those operators I still speak with today.
1989:I was accepted into the apprenticeship training program.
1989: Great Lakes Construction Co. on I-270 on the west side of Columbus to run a hoist on the side of a large concrete paver. I spent 2 seasons there operating and maintaining, broom tractor, roller, skid steer, loader, dozer and backhoe. I spent most of the second season on the paving spread operating a texture and cure machine and helping maintain the paver.
Fall/winter of 1989: I worked for Parks drilling as an Oiler and rigger for a drill rig
1990: the Kokosing Construction Co. I ran a 627 Cat double barrel scraper before returning to Great Lakes in the spring
1991: Igel Co. I operated and maintained compaction equipment like a sheep foot and smooth drum roller.
1991: Baker Concrete running a forklift, and in downtown Columbus running a forklift and some RT crane work.
1991: Exco as a helper for the Mechanic and grease man
1991: All crane as an Oiler
1991: Scurlock running a Terex scraper, roller and loader
1992: Exco Co. to operate a dozer and roller on a large fill project
1992: Central Allied, a bridge Company, operating backhoe and RT crane on 2 separate projects where Shelly & Sands was the General Contractor.
1992: The fall of ’92 Shelly & Sands put a request in for me to run broom tractor for them for 2 weeks to help them finish the season. I remained with them for 5+ years.
1992-1997:Shelly & Sands, back hoe, loader, track loader, roller on dirt and asphalt, sheep foot, RT cranes, dozers, scrapers, self-loading and push type, off-road truck, grader, trencher (Vermeer type),Excavators of all sizes from mini to 450, hoe tamp.
1998-2000: I worked for Superior Electric operating a back hoe to dig for their conduit.
1998: I was dispatched to the Igel Co. to run Excavator. At Igel I operated multiple size Excavators doing clearing and grubbing, along with erosion control on numerous sites in Columbus. During this time I was the lead person dealing directly with the City of Columbus, some projects lasted days, weeks and months.
2000-2004: Lionel Construction Co. I installed pipe and structures at various sites using an excavator, back hoe and hoe tamp among others. We installed various pipe, plastic, concrete and ductile iron.
2004: C.J. Mahon I was dispatched to run a 450 Excavator on a deep cut at a waste water treatment plant in Columbus. I also operated various crawler cranes both friction and hydraulic.
In 2004 I began working for Jay Dee Mining Co. I ran various pieces of equipment, dozer, track hoe, loader, Rt cranes, back hoe though most of my time was spent in a crawler crane. During preparation for mining I drove piling, handled steel and iron to construct an access shaft, continuous man cage operation. I also unloaded and helped construct the tunnel boring machine in close quarter and precise situations with weights in excess of 250,000#. Once mining began it was my job to pick up train cars loaded with tunnel excavation and pull them up a 100, shaft empty them and return them to the tracks back in the bottom of the shaft. I also had to continually supply the mining machine with supplies. This amounted to nearly 100 lifts/ day for several years, all with radio contacted only, totally in the blind, communication had to be perfect.
2006-2007: local 18 Organizer
2008-2009: recalled to Jay Dee to Southerly Waste Water Treatment Plant and worked another tunnel in New Albany to completion.
2010-2015: All Crane rental, here I have operated hydraulic and conventional crawler cranes, Rt and truck cranes from every manufacturer. At All, we find ourselves in a complex and problem solving environment. I have constructed, maintained and operated cranes in constantly changing situations. I have set iron, set machinery, different types of units with different cranes having to adapt at every turn. We have used a man cage in several different applications such as, erecting signs and billboards on high rises downtown among others. I’ve worked at several AEP plants, auto manufacturing and chemical plants. I worked on a wind farm assisting the erection of more than 150 wind turbines while operating a large crawler crane. Most days I taxi cranes out of the yard to different locations to due multiple tasks, could be setting roof trusses, erecting steel or replacing HVAC units on an existing building. Most days I would show up on a job, have a pre-lift meeting and make all decisions on location to set up, rigging to use for the best and safest way to accomplish the goal. In some cases, I would have to postpone a job to be reevaluated due to lack of proper rigging, load weight or conditions that would not allow the job to proceed safely.
