April12th-Met at church. Ryan, Marty, Kyle, Mac and Eugene shared energy efficiency ideas, products and issues.

Ryan – 1921 Clintonville house (2 stories)with no insulation in walls or attic, had Columbia Gas audit and has gotten estimates for insulation and electrical upgrades (knob and tube wiring currently, mostly ungrounded outlets, 100amp service), have some CFL bulbs

Marty –1950s era south-facing ranch house with solar installed, highly insulated and efficient (attic is R60, walls are R40, and below grade is R20 – all well above code), they have 2 fireplaces that affect efficiency and are mulling over solutions

Kyle – 1995 house (not in Clintonville) with attic and wall insulation, “smart settings” using phone apps to regulate lights and HVAC, bedroom stays warm through the night in winter so can turn down thermostat, temp drops and lights go out when leave the house

Mac – 1926 Clintonville house (2 stories), Columbia Gas audit in 2010 with follow-up blower test in 2014, attic has 2 layers on insulation with an additional 2 feet of cellulose blown over that, walls are insulated (with a few lighter spots viewed with infrared camera), crawl space insulated with foam, whole-house fan that can clear the air in the am and keep house cool through most of a hot summer day, new 120 amp electrical service, all wall outlets are upgraded to 3-prong or GFCI (low-amp breakers around water sources), have new double-pane windows throughout, doors have all been weather-stripped, fireplace chimney has been sealed and modern non-vented gas logs installed (with carbon monoxide sensor nearby, hot water heater has insulation “blanket”

Eugene – shared some technology for monitoring wattage of appliances, mentioned PUCO hearing to allow AEP to increase charges, shared an article about LED lights and the blue light they emit that may hurt eyes (and be unhealthy in other ways (see - look for LED on the web page)

Next meeting is May 8that the church and we’ll be reviewing Kyle’s plans for solar (similar to how we reviewed Diane’s plans in March)
