KS1 RE: Exploring Values: Two Religious Tales
0001 10:00:00:09 10:00:01:24
(sitar music)
0002 10:00:08:15 10:00:11:01
Hello. I'm Venerable Buddhadasa.
0003 10:00:11:01 10:00:15:13
I'm a Buddhist monk, and I follow
the example of the Buddha.
0004 10:00:15:13 10:00:19:00
There are hundreds of tales
which teach us about the Buddha.
0005 10:00:19:00 10:00:22:23
In the Buddha's birth stories,
he is reborn over many lifetimes
0006 10:00:22:23 10:00:25:04
so he can learn
all the different qualities
0007 10:00:25:04 10:00:26:24
he needed to become a Buddha.
0008 10:00:26:24 10:00:29:13
In the story I've chosen for you,
0009 10:00:29:13 10:00:32:04
the Buddha is born
as a brave little parrot.
0010 10:00:32:04 10:00:35:17
His act of courage and kindness
opens the hearts of others.
0011 10:00:35:17 10:00:40:02
Take a look and see what you admire
about the brave little parrot.
0012 10:00:40:02 10:00:42:12
Maybe he'll inspire you too.
0013 10:00:52:18 10:00:56:12
Once, long ago,
0014 10:00:56:12 10:01:00:04
the Buddha was born
as a little parrot.
0015 10:01:02:08 10:01:03:08
(squawks)
0016 10:01:06:21 10:01:11:02
One day, a storm
fell upon his forest home.
0017 10:01:11:02 10:01:12:13
(thunder)
0018 10:01:12:13 10:01:14:08
Lightning flashed.
0019 10:01:16:20 10:01:18:15
Thunder crashed.
0020 10:01:20:03 10:01:23:08
Then a dead tree,
struck by lightning,
0021 10:01:23:08 10:01:25:14
burst into flame.
0022 10:01:26:14 10:01:32:02
Sparks leapt upon the wind, and very
soon the whole forest was ablaze.
0023 10:01:32:02 10:01:34:02
Terrified animals ran...
0024 10:01:34:02 10:01:35:08
(gibbers)
0025 10:01:35:08 10:01:37:18
..ran wildly in every direction...
0026 10:01:37:18 10:01:38:19
(roars)
0027 10:01:38:19 10:01:41:13
..trying to escape
from the flames and the smoke.
0028 10:01:41:13 10:01:43:08
(trumpets)
0029 10:01:44:08 10:01:47:12
"Fire! Fire!"
cried the little parrot.
0030 10:01:49:12 10:01:50:22
"To the river!"
0031 10:01:50:22 10:01:53:14
As he flew...
0032 10:01:53:14 10:01:56:22
he saw that many animals
were trapped down below,
0033 10:01:56:22 10:02:00:02
unable to escape
from the flames and the smoke.
0034 10:02:00:02 10:02:05:16
Suddenly, a desperate idea,
a way to save them, came to him.
0035 10:02:06:21 10:02:09:14
He darted to the river.
0036 10:02:12:08 10:02:15:08
He dipped himself
in the cool water...
0037 10:02:17:05 10:02:21:15
and he flew back
over the now raging fire.
0038 10:02:22:12 10:02:26:04
At last, when he was over
the centre of the forest,
0039 10:02:26:04 10:02:29:01
the little parrot shook his wings.
0040 10:02:32:04 10:02:36:24
And a few drops of water
that still clung to his feathers
0041 10:02:36:24 10:02:41:15
tumbled down like jewels
into the heart of the blaze,
0042 10:02:41:15 10:02:43:06
and vanished.
0043 10:02:43:06 10:02:45:06
(hisses)
0044 10:02:46:02 10:02:50:06
Once more, the little parrot flew
through the flames and the smoke
0045 10:02:50:06 10:02:54:08
and dipped himself
in the cool water.
0046 10:02:55:09 10:02:57:24
Back and forth he flew,
0047 10:02:57:24 10:02:59:24
back and forth.
0048 10:03:01:03 10:03:07:06
His feathers were charred,
his feet were scorched.
0049 10:03:07:06 10:03:13:08
His lungs ached,
his eyes stared red as coals.
0050 10:03:13:08 10:03:17:15
And his mind span as dizzily
as the spinning sparks.
0051 10:03:19:23 10:03:23:19
But still the little parrot flew on.
0052 10:03:24:09 10:03:29:20
At that time, some of the devas,
gods of a happy kingdom,
0053 10:03:31:22 10:03:38:04
were floating by in their
cloud palaces of ivory and gold.
0054 10:03:38:04 10:03:41:02
In between mouthfuls
of honeyed food,
0055 10:03:42:10 10:03:44:23
they happened to look down.
0056 10:03:48:01 10:03:52:02
"Why, look at that silly bird!"
0057 10:03:55:10 10:03:59:21
"Ooh! He's trying
to put out a whole forest fire
0058 10:03:59:21 10:04:02:18
with a few sprinkles of water."
0059 10:04:02:18 10:04:04:12
(mocking laughter)
0060 10:04:06:17 10:04:09:10
"How absurd!"
0061 10:04:09:24 10:04:14:03
But one of the gods,
strangely moved,
0062 10:04:14:03 10:04:18:12
turned himself into a golden eagle,
0063 10:04:18:12 10:04:21:07
and flew down...
0064 10:04:22:07 10:04:25:12
down toward the parrot's fiery path.
0065 10:04:27:13 10:04:29:18
"Go back, little bird."
0066 10:04:30:18 10:04:33:20
"Your task is hopeless."
0067 10:04:35:01 10:04:40:16
"You can't put out a whole forest
fire with a few drops of water."
0068 10:04:40:16 10:04:45:02
"Save yourself now,
before it's too late."
0069 10:04:48:17 10:04:54:02
"I don't need a great shiny eagle
telling me what to do!" (coughs)
0070 10:04:55:03 10:04:57:02
"I don't need advice!"
0071 10:04:58:02 10:05:00:14
"I just need someone to help!"
0072 10:05:03:06 10:05:06:12
And the god, that great eagle,
0073 10:05:06:12 10:05:11:02
seeing the little parrot
flying back and forth,
0074 10:05:11:02 10:05:13:22
thought suddenly of his own kind.
0075 10:05:15:06 10:05:17:04
There they were,
0076 10:05:17:04 10:05:20:24
laughing and talking,
while down below,
0077 10:05:20:24 10:05:24:11
many animals cried out
in fear and pain from the flames.
0078 10:05:24:11 10:05:27:11
And the great eagle grew ashamed.
0079 10:05:29:08 10:05:32:09
One single desire
came into his heart.
0080 10:05:33:09 10:05:35:09
God though he was,
0081 10:05:35:09 10:05:40:12
he just wanted to be
like that little parrot.
0082 10:05:40:12 10:05:42:24
He wanted to help.
0083 10:05:46:03 10:05:49:23
"I... will... help."
0084 10:05:51:02 10:05:54:19
And flushed with these new emotions,
0085 10:05:54:19 10:05:57:11
he began to weep.
0086 10:05:59:00 10:06:04:21
Stream after stream of sparkling
tears poured from his eyes.
0087 10:06:04:21 10:06:09:08
They washed down
like cooling rain upon the fire...
0088 10:06:10:17 10:06:12:09
upon the forest,
0089 10:06:12:09 10:06:14:11
upon the animals
0090 10:06:14:11 10:06:16:21
and upon the little parrot himself.
0091 10:06:17:17 10:06:20:19
The flames... died down.
0092 10:06:22:17 10:06:25:12
The smoke began to clear.
0093 10:06:28:02 10:06:31:03
The eagle's tears
dripped from the burnt branches
0094 10:06:31:03 10:06:35:17
and, where they glistened,
new life pushed forth.
0095 10:06:37:04 10:06:39:15
Shoots, stems,
0096 10:06:39:15 10:06:43:15
leaves, green grass
and beautiful flowers
0097 10:06:43:15 10:06:46:00
pushed forth
from amongst the cinders.
0098 10:06:46:00 10:06:50:05
Where the tears sparkled
on the parrot's wings...
0099 10:06:52:16 10:06:54:18
new feathers grew.
0100 10:06:56:20 10:06:59:17
Red, yellow, green feathers -
0101 10:06:59:17 10:07:01:20
such bright colours,
0102 10:07:01:20 10:07:04:15
such a handsome bird!
0103 10:07:06:13 10:07:10:02
The animals looked at one another
in astonishment.
0104 10:07:10:02 10:07:12:17
Not one of them was harmed.
0105 10:07:13:11 10:07:15:09
And there,
0106 10:07:15:09 10:07:19:04
up above in the clear sky,
0107 10:07:19:04 10:07:24:06
the little parrot was looping
and soaring in delight,
0108 10:07:25:06 10:07:27:04
washed and bright,
0109 10:07:27:04 10:07:29:00
laughing for joy.
0110 10:07:30:17 10:07:34:11
Hooray! Hooray! Hooray!
0111 10:07:35:17 10:07:40:12
Hooray
for the brave little parrot...
0112 10:07:41:09 10:07:43:19
and for the miraculous rain.
0113 10:07:47:09 10:07:49:07
When all hope had gone,
0114 10:07:49:07 10:07:53:22
somehow that little parrot
had saved them.
0115 10:08:07:08 10:08:11:09
Hello. My name's Seeta.
I'm a Hindu.
0116 10:08:11:09 10:08:16:12
In my religion, there are hundreds
of ways to think about God.
0117 10:08:16:12 10:08:21:12
One of my favourite ways
is to think about God as a mother,
0118 10:08:21:12 10:08:25:20
like the mother goddess
Hindus called Parvati.
0119 10:08:25:20 10:08:28:04
In the story I'm going to show you,
0120 10:08:28:04 10:08:31:18
you'll meet Parvati
and her young son Ganesh.
0121 10:08:31:18 10:08:34:01
Ganesh can be quite naughty,
0122 10:08:34:01 10:08:37:01
especially when
his mum's not watching.
0123 10:08:38:05 10:08:41:16
But he also loves to learn,
and in this tale
0124 10:08:41:16 10:08:45:16
the mother goddess teaches Ganesh
a very important lesson.
0125 10:08:45:16 10:08:50:06
Have a look, and see if
there's a lesson here for you too.
0126 10:08:59:05 10:09:02:09
Ganesh, the elephant-headed god...
0127 10:09:02:09 10:09:03:19
(trumpets)
0128 10:09:05:00 10:09:08:07
..the son of
the mother goddess Parvati.
0129 10:09:11:12 10:09:16:20
Ganesh, like all children,
was sent to school to become clever.
0130 10:09:26:09 10:09:28:04
On the first day of school,
0131 10:09:28:04 10:09:32:19
Ganesh learnt the first
three letters of the alphabet.
0132 10:09:33:19 10:09:35:10
A...
0133 10:09:36:12 10:09:38:03
B...
0134 10:09:38:03 10:09:40:16
and C.
0135 10:09:40:16 10:09:46:07
Ganesh was so excited
that he ran all the way home.
0136 10:09:48:07 10:09:49:17
"A!"
0137 10:09:52:03 10:09:53:13
"B!"
0138 10:09:57:09 10:09:59:09
"C!"
0139 10:09:59:09 10:10:01:23
"Oh, Mum! Mum!"
0140 10:10:01:23 10:10:02:23
(trumpets)
0141 10:10:03:20 10:10:06:07
"Come and play A-B-C with me!"
0142 10:10:06:08 10:10:08:24
But Mum was busy.
0143 10:10:10:03 10:10:13:12
"Go and play in the garden,
Ganesh."
0144 10:10:14:12 10:10:17:22
With that,
Ganesh went into the garden.
0145 10:10:17:22 10:10:20:07
He wanted someone to play with.
0146 10:10:20:07 10:10:22:04
He saw some butterflies.
0147 10:10:23:19 10:10:25:18
But they fluttered away.
0148 10:10:25:18 10:10:27:22
Then he saw some birds.
0149 10:10:30:05 10:10:32:08
But they flew away too.
0150 10:10:33:08 10:10:36:16
Then he saw the neighbours' cat.
0151 10:10:39:04 10:10:40:04
(meows)
0152 10:10:41:03 10:10:46:13
"We are going to play school,"
said Ganesh.
0153 10:10:46:13 10:10:49:21
"Now, repeat after me,
0154 10:10:49:21 10:10:53:04
A, B, C!"
0155 10:10:56:11 10:11:02:06
"Meow, meow, meow," said the cat.
0156 10:11:04:18 10:11:07:11
Ganesh became really annoyed,
0157 10:11:07:11 10:11:11:11
and started waving his finger
at the cat.
0158 10:11:12:12 10:11:16:09
The cat did not like
being told off...
0159 10:11:19:20 10:11:23:07
and ran away, feeling very hurt.
0160 10:11:27:10 10:11:30:05
Ganesh decided
to go back to the house.
0161 10:11:38:03 10:11:41:11
When he arrived home,
Ganesh was very surprised
0162 10:11:41:11 10:11:44:11
to see his mum looking very hurt.
0163 10:11:45:13 10:11:46:13
"Mum?"
0164 10:11:48:10 10:11:52:17
"Why do you look so... so hurt?"
0165 10:11:54:03 10:11:59:17
"Ganesh, come here and tell me.
What were you doing in the garden?"
0166 10:11:59:17 10:12:05:09
- "I was just playing with the cat."
- "Did you hurt the cat?"
0167 10:12:05:09 10:12:07:15
"Just a little bit."
0168 10:12:08:14 10:12:12:20
"Listen to me, my boy,
and listen very carefully."
0169 10:12:12:20 10:12:14:03
"I am going to teach you
0170 10:12:14:03 10:12:18:18
the most important lesson
you will learn in your life."
0171 10:12:20:03 10:12:22:13
"I, the mother goddess,
0172 10:12:22:13 10:12:26:05
am the mother
of the whole universe,
0173 10:12:26:05 10:12:28:05
and live in all things."
0174 10:12:31:16 10:12:34:08
"It is I who lives in this plant."
0175 10:12:35:04 10:12:38:23
"It is I who live in these flowers."
0176 10:12:38:23 10:12:40:04
"It is I who live...
0177 10:12:40:04 10:12:41:17
(meows)
0178 10:12:41:17 10:12:43:05
..in the cat."
0179 10:12:45:20 10:12:51:02
"If you hurt or harm
any living thing, you hurt me."
0180 10:12:52:02 10:12:55:08
"Do you now understand
why I looked so sad?"
0181 10:12:56:10 10:12:58:15
Ganesh now understood.
0182 10:12:58:15 10:13:02:06
It was God alone
who lived in all living things,
0183 10:13:02:06 10:13:05:23
and if we hurt or harm anything,
0184 10:13:05:23 10:13:07:13
we hurt God.
0185 10:13:10:04 10:13:16:04
From that day on, Ganesh never hurt
or harmed another living thing.
0186 10:13:17:11 10:13:21:02
That is why Hindus,
when they meet each other,
0187 10:13:21:02 10:13:25:05
put their hands together,
take a gentle bow,
0188 10:13:25:05 10:13:27:18
and say, "Namaste",
0189 10:13:27:18 10:13:31:13
which means, "There is God in you."
