Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
In today’s gospel, we hear of the ten men afflicted with leprosy, and the one who glorifies God for being healed. It is a dramatic scene of gratitude. But in order for the miracle to happen in the first place, these men had to start walking in faith before their diseased conditions changed one tiny bit. Good stewards of their faith realize that they cannot wait until their problems are over to start walking in faith. They praise God even in the darkest of nights, and in the worst of circumstances. Do we walk in faith, giving the Lord our gratitude even when we are in difficult circumstances?
Month of Mary
The month of May and October are dedicated to our Blessed Mother, the Virgin Mary. It is an invitation during these months to take time to pray the rosary everyday with our family and meditate on how she teaches us to be a true disciple of her son, Jesus. We invite all our children to bring flowers to our Blessed Mother during the month of October.
We will be praying the Rosary in Spanish every day at 7:00 pm in the Church Garden.
PROPOSITION 62
This election season, the CA bishops have chosen Proposition 62 as their top priority. A yes vote for Prop 62 will abolish the death penalty in California. And in its place give a sentence of life without the possibility of parole. Pope St. John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, and Pope Francis have all stated there is no need for death penalty on our community. Now is the time for our state to join the growing number of states who have abolished capital punishment. We ask you to prayerfully consider joining the efforts to end the death penalty. Sandwich Sunday and Clothing Drive
Next Sunday, October 16th is Sandwich Sunday. We start bagging lunches at 10:00 am in the Parish Hall. All are welcomed to help us making the lunches. We are in need of the following items: individually packaged chips and cookies and bottled water (16.9 fl. oz.) These items can be taken to the rectory any time during the month.
We also have a clothing drive every Sandwich Sunday. Clothes can be dropped off (only) at the parish hall between 10:00 and 11:30 a.m. on Sandwich Sunday. You can also get a tax write off for your donation. The lunches and clothing will be picked up by MEND. If you have any questions please call Linda Medina (818) 437-4738.
LEGION OF MARY
The Legion of Mary meets every Sunday at 10:00 AM in the Religion Center. Come pray the rosary with them and find out all they do in their ministry.

Do you find it easy to pray? For most of us, prayer can be difficult with our busy lives and/or our inability to quiet our minds. Oremus study program teaches us the essentials of an effective and fruitful prayer life. Come join us every Thursday evening from now until Nov. 17th at 7:00 pm in the Library. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE
September 28 to November 6
40 Days for Life is a community-based campaign that takes a determined, peaceful approach to showing local communities the consequences of abortion in their own neighborhoods, for their own friends and families. It puts into action a desire to cooperate with God in the carrying out of His plan for the end of abortion. It draws attention to the evil of abortion through the use of a three-point program:
· Prayer and fasting: believers are invited to join together for 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion.
· Constant vigil: stand for life during a 40-day peaceful public witness outside of: Family Planning Associates 10200 Sepulveda Blvd, Mission Hills.
· Community outreach: help take a positive, upbeat pro-life message to every corner of our valley through media efforts, advocacy and public visibility

Sometimes adults may have a tendency to try and fix problems that come up with their children. While the instinct to help and the loving concern behind it is understandable, it is not always the best course of action if the child is not learning something about how to handle a problem at least partly on their own. For some problems, children just need a good listener; for others they need guidance and help discerning how best to respond. Try asking questions, encouraging solutions, and praying with and for the child. DISCOVER YOUR HEALTH
A health and wellness program will be offered by a certified Holistic Nutritionist at St. Ferdinand. The course of six classes, each focusing on a specific topic. Classes will be held every Friday from October 21 – December 2nd. From 6:30 – 8:30 pm. Every participant will obtain a personalized goal for their health/weight; everyone will be weighed each week to monitor progress. Vigésimo Octavo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
En el Evangelio de hoy, escuchamos acerca de diez hombres afligidos por la lepra, y de uno que glorifica al Señor después de haber sido sanado. Esta es una dramática escena de gratitud. Pero para que el milagro suceda, en primer lugar estos hombres tienen que empezar a caminar en la fe antes de que las condiciones de su enfermedad cambien un poco. Los buenos corresponsables de su fe son conscientes de que no pueden esperar hasta que sus problemas se resuelvan para comenzar a caminar en la fe. Ellos alaban a Dios, aún en la más obscura de las noches, y en la peor de las circunstancias. ¿Caminamos nosotros en la fe, ofreciendo al Señor nuestra gratitud aun cuando estemos en circunstancias difíciles?
PROPOSICION 62
En esta temporada electoral los Obispos del estado de California han decidido darle prioridad a la Proposición 62. Un voto a favor de la proposición 62 abobaría con la pena de muerte en el estado de California y la remplazaría con una sentencia de cadena perpetua sin la posibilidad de salir bajo la libertad condicional. El Papa Francisco al igual que sus predecesores el Papa San Juan Pablo II y el Papa Benedicto XVI han acertado que nuestra sociedad no necesita la pena de muerte. Ya es tiempo de que nuestro estado se una al creciente número de estado que han abolido la pena de muerte. Les pedimos sus oraciones y su colaboración en el esfuerzo que se hace por darle fin con la pena de muerte en el estado de California.

Mes de María
Los meses de mayo y octubre son dedicados a Nuestra Madre Santísima, la Virgen María. Es una invitación durante estos meses para tomar el tiempo y rezar el rosario cada día con nuestras familias y meditar en como ella nos enseña a ser un verdadero discípulo de su hijo, Jesús. Invitamos a todos los niños de traer flores a nuestra Madre María en este mes de Octubre. Estaremos rezando el rosario todos los días a las 7:00 pm en el Jardín de la Iglesia.
40 DIAS POR LA VIDA
40 Días por la Vida es una campaña basada en la comunidad que tiene un enfoque determinado, pacífico a las comunidades locales que muestra las consecuencias del aborto en sus propios barrios, entre sus propios amigos y familiares. Se pone en acción un deseo de cooperar con Dios en la realización de su plan para el fin del aborto. Se llama la atención sobre el mal del aborto mediante el uso de un programa de tres puntos:
· La oración y el ayuno: Las personas creyentes de nuestra ciudad están invitadas a unirse durante 40 días de ferviente oración y ayuno para pedir por el fin del aborto.
· Vigilia constante: Una hora (o más) a la semana, durante 40 días, ven apararte enfrente de: Family Planning Associates 10200 Sepulveda Blvd, Mission Hills.
· Difusión proactiva en la comunidad: Ayuda a difundir un mensaje pro-vida positivo y optimista en cada rincón de nuestra ciudad a través de esfuerzos en los medios de comunicación, actividades de promoción y presencia pública.

¿SABÍA QUE?
Evite “reparar” y trate de escuchar y entender
En ocasiones los adultos pudieran tener una tendencia a tratar de reparar problemas que puedan surgir con sus hijos. Aunque el instinto para ayudar y la preocupación amorosa detrás de esta actitud es comprensible, no es siempre el mejor curso de acción a tomar si el niño o la niña no está aprendiendo algo sobre cómo manejar un problema, al menos en parte por ellos mismos. Para algunos problemas, los niños sólo necesitan un buen escucha; otros necesitan guía y ayuda para discernir cómo responder mejor. Trate de hacer preguntas, anímelos a encontrar soluciones, y rece con y por el niño o la niña.
