Course Outline

Sea Kayaking Cornwall in partnership with Adventure Elements, Anglesey have developed the six week advanced guide-training programme in accordance with the International Sea Kayak Guide Association (ISKGA) framework of modules. The course is aimed at intermediate to advanced paddlers wishing to work within the industry, leading groups in advanced waters, challenging conditions and remote environments.

Upon successful completion of the course you will have the experience and qualifications to run safe, enjoyable and informative trips in a variety of conditions and environments.

Where?

The course will be based out of Falmouth, Cornwall for the first 3 weeks utilising the ideal surf and rocky shoreline environments and then move to Anglesey, North Wales for the final 3 weeks, where the dynamic tidal races and over-falls shall become the dominant feature. By using a variety of locations in each area we can ensure that you develop your guiding skills to the maximum.

Both Jeff and Simon have participated and led expeditions at many international locations; this includes circumnavigations of Great Britain, Ireland, Japan and South Georgia as well as major expeditions to Madagascar, Scandinavia, Korea, Alaska and a whole host of other locations in and around North America, the Mediterranean and Europe. Many thousands of miles have been completed by the staff of SKC and from these experiences you will learn an array of skills to help you along your chosen path…….

Why Adventure Elements? James Stevenson is a BCU Level 5 Coach and runs a successful sea kayaking business in North Wales - Adventure Elements. He has incredible knowledge of the complex tidal waters of North Wales and has been coaching advanced skills and navigation for over a decade around Anglesey, which is regarded by many as being the Mecca of sea kayaking destinations. James also runs expeditions around the globe and can be found at various events throughout the year coaching and giving presentations.

Costs:

The course fee includes personal equipment hire (Kayak, Paddle, Deck, Buoyancy aid, Wetsuit, Cag but will not include personal leadership equipment such as repair kits, first aid kits etc unless this has been arranged prior to attending the course), instruction and transport during the course. We are offering an accommodation option for a fee of £600 for the 6 weeks duration.

Accommodation:

We have bunkhouse accommodation, which is a self-catering mixed dormitory for up to four candidates. Some of the course will be conducted out in the field, but the majority will be based out of the same building as the accommodation. For the North Wales part of the course we will be based out of a rented self-catering house or apartment, within a stones throw of the sea. Wild camping shall also be experienced on regular occasions throughout the course.

Location and times:

Students shall arrive on the evening prior to the course commencing, which will be at 0930 at: SKC Headquarters Dove House, Tregoniggie Industrial Estate, Falmouth, Cornwall, TR11 4SN

Directions:

Sea Kayaking Cornwall is located on the outskirts of Falmouth Follow signs towards Falmouth on the A39, this will take you past the ASDA super store, continue on until the next roundabout with the replica cannons on display, take the second exit towards Buddock Water. Continue straight across the next double roundabout and after about 200m turn left into Tregoniggie Industrial Estate, after approximately a further 200 metres you will see us on the left hand side of the road.

What to bring:

Any Paddling equipment you have which you feel will be suitable for the course Camping equipment (Tent, cooker, sleeping bag/mat, dry bags etc) Association Logbook (BCU, ACA, EPP, Salswasser-Union etc.) Supporting Qualifications & certificates (Kayaking, First aid etc.) Warm clothing Personal washing kit and towel Flask Camera
