Age Discrimination Ban comes in to force

From 1st October 2012, it will be unlawful for service providers, policy makers and commissioners to discriminate, victimise, or harass a person because of age.

The ban is only intended to prevent harmful uses of age. Positive use of age in providing, commissioning and planning services will be able to continue. The Act does not prevent differential treatment where this is objectively justified. Policy makers, commissioners, providers and individuals working in health and social care should continue to take into account someone’s age when it is right and beneficial to do so. Invitation – Dementia Dialogue 2012

Scotland’s National Dementia Strategy was launched in June 2010 with the aim of ensuring the highest quality of care and support for people with dementia at every stage of the illness.

The Scottish Government is now reviewing the progress of the Dementia Strategy and will be launching an updated Dementia Strategy during 2013.

Six events, throughout Scotland, provide an opportunity for you to come along and comment on the progress of the strategy to date, identify the gaps, opportunities and priorities and to help shape the direction of Scotland’s National Dementia Strategy from 2013.

For all further event enquires, contact or call 0141 418 3936 or visit Alzheimer Scotland’s website for more information.

Carers Strategy - workforce education project

A NES/SSSC project to ensure that carers and young carers are embedded in workforce education across health and social services is working to:

·  develop core competencies to underpin workforce education on carers;

·  identify good practice for workforce education and develop guidance on this;

·  develop an online portalfor learning resources.

Gill Ryan, project lead, would appreciate the benefit of your knowledge and experience. You can choose the level of involvement that suits you:

1.  Take 5-10 minutes to complete an online survey: https://response.questback.com/nhseducationforscotland/carers/

2.  Share learning resources you have used or examples of good practice.

3.  Let Gill know if you would like to be kept informed about the project by email.

4.  Join a reference pool of interested people who will help us develop the core competencies. You can choose to be involved in this by email only or you can participate in planned focus groups as the project progresses.

Transforming the delivery of health and social care: The case for fundamental change. This King’s Fund report explores how the current health and social care delivery system has failed to keep pace with the population's needs and expectations. It argues that incremental changes to existing models of care will not be sufficient in addressing these challenges and that a much bolder approach is needed to bring about innovative models that are appropriate to the needs of the population and are high quality, sustainable and offer value for money.

And the following publication explores factors that might be driving the significant variation in use of hospital beds by patients over 65 admitted as an emergency, including a helpful blog response on virtual ward evaluation at Belford Hospital - http://www.kingsfund.org.uk/publications/emergency_beds.html
