Dear Mrs. Adbley!
It has been a while since the school “Schule am Sandberg” has received the letters of your pupils through Hedy Adam. We were very happy having received them and the drawings which have been hung out in the corridors of our school a long time.
In the meantime, our pupils have already replied to the letters. In fact, we have done much more than that. During our “Ghana project week” we have been working on different topics about Ghana with Hedy and a couple of more people from Ghana. The result can be regarded in the brochure in the affix. We sang African songs, cooked, braided pupil’s hair, learned and built the “Oware-game”, drummed and danced. To stress this, we were especially impressed by the “Adinkra-signs” which we have printed on blankets and t-shirts. By now our pupils have become really very curious about Ghana and would like to know more about the new pen pals. We are already greatly looking forward to the response. While working on the letters, we were wondering how our friends from Ghana and how you, too, envisage our collective future aims. If the possibility existed, our pupils would love to immediately go on the journey to Ghana, but unfortunately this isn’t realisable. We would be very pleased if we could get to know your questions and suggestions. What do the children want to know? Our children are particularly interested in the question of why school uniforms have to be worn and how the children think about this issue. They would love to learn the school song and to know more about everyday life at school. Are people strict there?
Obviously I would like to know how you, Mrs. Agbley, picture our future commonality. How do we continue our work together? How can we build up an enduring contact?
At present, we are concerned with a school contest which also deals with Africa. I will tell you more about it in the next letter.
