Ordination of Priests

The Rev Janet Durrans, from Chislehurst will be ordained a Priest at a ceremony at St Nicholas Church, Chislehurst, on 8 September 2012.
Janet, who used to be administrative assistant to the Bishop of Tonbridge, will be priested by the Bishop the Rt Rev Brian Castle. Janet said, “I loved working for Bishop Brian and his wife, Jane. I started working for them at the beginning of the ordination process and Bishop Brian saw me through it. It is wonderful that he is coming to Chislehurst to ordain me priest.”
During her time as deacon Janet has led all age worship which involves visual displays, worship songs and an interactive talk. She has also spent time going into nursing homes once a fortnight to take communion. The bread and wine for this service has already been consecrated but Janet is looking forward to the opportunity of now being able to do this herself.
Janet said, “I have really enjoyed my first year as deacon – I have done so much! Being ordained priest is so special and I am both excited and a little nervous and also mindful of what a huge privilege it is.”
Janet has three adult children, Christopher, Andrew and Matthew.

2. Clergy in the Church of England are generally ordained and serve as Deacons for one year before being ordained Priest. Once ordained priest, they can consecrate the bread and the wine at Holy Communion, pronounce absolution and give a blessing in the name of Christ.
3. Janet has a BA in Christian Theology from Westcott House in Cambridge.
4. Janet has previously worked at Lloyds Bank and as a classroom assistant.
5. Janet enjoys gardening, reading, listening to music and swimming. She also loves watching football and is a Manchester United supporter.
