An evaluation panel will always include external academic(s) with knowledge of the subject area presented for approval/review and panel members with appropriate experience of the type of provision.

·  industry representatives will form part of a panel wherever possible and appropriate;

·  for Foundation degrees, the panel will include a practitioner in the relevant field;

·  additional requirements may be specified for programmes that involve Professional, Statutory or Regulatory Bodies (PSRBs).

When identifying nominees academic staff should keep in mind how the nominee will enable the University to achieve BU2018 Creating, Sharing, Inspiring – creating the most stimulating, challenging and rewarding university experience in a world-class learning community by sharing our unique fusion of excellent education, research and professional practice and inspiring our students, graduates and staff to enrich the world. In selecting the external panel, Academic Quality (AQ) considers the subject coverage, experience and balance of professionals and academics. Academic panel members should be able to offer preferably all of the following:

·  broad overview of the subject area under consideration;

·  experience of programme leadership on a similar scale;

·  experience of external examining;

·  academic qualifications above that of the level of the award being evaluated;

·  relevant expertise that reflects the uniqueness of the programme and award (e.g. flexible learning, work-based learning, distance learning, foundation degree provision);

·  offer expertise that will ensure the programme is at the forefront of competitor programmes.

The UCAS website for instance may be a useful starting point for development teams to establish which other institutions deliver programmes in the same subject area and make contact with those departments for potential panel members.

It should be noted that:

·  nominees should not have had any close relationship with the University or its Partners, other than a one-off engagement for a PGR examination, normally within the last five years such as teaching (other than guest lectures), external examining, membership of industry liaison panels, supervising PhD students etc.;

·  it should also be noted that members of the team should not have had any substantial contact with the nominee’s department during this period. Where more than one external academic is required, they will not be drawn from the same institution.

When approaching nominees to ascertain their willingness and suitability, Faculties should make it clear that participation is subject to University approval.

·  completed nomination forms should be submitted to AQ as soon as possible after the initial planning meeting and by a date agreed with AQ. If the Faculty does not nominate EPMs by the agreed date, the External Panel meeting may have to be delayed which can have a significant impact on the student experience and the timing of when programmes can be advertised on Course Search;

·  panel nominations must be supported by the Deputy Dean Education and Professional Practice or their nominated representative, and forwarded to AQ for approval;

·  AQ will approve nominations and formally invite nominees to act as panel members.
