2009-2012 Feldenkrais® Teacher Training Intensive Starting Soon
An 800-hour training in the Feldenkrais Method® is scheduled to alternate its segments
in both Seattle and the Eastside starting March, 2009. This professional teacher training
will offer residents of the Pacific Northwest a rare opportunity to become a Guild
Certified Feldenkrais Practitionercm or pursue an intensive program of self-growth and
development close to home. Offered by ExplorACTION, LLC and accredited by the
Feldenkrais Guild® of North America, this program consists of 8, 1-month segments
given in the fall and spring, M-F, weekends off over a period of 4 years, ending 2012.
Named after its originator, Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais, D.Sc. (1904-1984), the Feldenkrais
Method® combines principles of martial arts, physics and biomechanics with an
empirical understanding of learning and human development to improve neuromuscular
patterns and human functioning. For over 50 years, performing artists, athletes, and those
with motor dysfunctions, such as cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, and stroke, have used
this unique system of learning to achieve peak performance. Its benefits extend beyond
the physical to include all aspects of life. Recently, forward thinkers such as baby
boomers have embraced Feldenkrais® as a way to avoid injury, prevent physical
deterioration, and remain active as they age. They appreciate that a flexible mind is a
flexible body and are steadfast in self-maintenance.
Feldenkrais Training Programs attract physical, occupational, massage therapists,
nursing, health care, and gerontology specialists, professionals in the performing arts,
sports, fitness, and psychology as well as those seeking a career change. Students
enrolled solely for personal development gain a deeper understanding of themselves,
others, and the world around them while improving their personal comfort, health and
effectiveness. Students range in age from 18-80 and excel regardless of profession, age,
gender, race, or physical ability.
“The training is spread over 4 years because the learning is organic rather than
academic,” explains Angel Di Benedetto (GCFT) who studied under the direction of Dr.
Moshe Feldenkrais since 1980 and has taught in over 100 programs nationally and
internationally. “Motor development and the functional possibilities of the human body
are learned through personal experience and exploration. They develop kinesthetic
awareness and proprioception, enhance motor skills (initiation, orientation, timing and
coordination) while cultivating aptitudes such as fine sensorial perception, observational
and communication skills (verbal and nonverbal). Students develop to the degree that
they find their lives dramatically improving. They increase self-confidence and self-
reliance, which augments creative and flexible thinking. These learning experiences are
assimilated and integrated during the 5-6 months between segments and this maturation
process can't be rushed.”
Di Benedetto and the program's Administrative Director Richard Corbeil, GCFT, will
determine the overall format as well as the content of the Seattle Eastside Feldenkrais®
Training and make changes based upon each student's learning pace and rate of progress.
They meticulously select their visiting Trainers whose specific talents and interests match
the needs of their students. A low teacher-to-student ratio (1:20 for the first two years
and 1:15 thereafter) combined with a safe, stimulating and noncompetitive training
environment insures ideal learning conditions.
“This work has the potential to be one of the biggest phenomenon that this world has ever seen,” says Di Benedetto, “because more and more people are coming to realize that they themselves want to control the way they age. The Feldenkrais Method® is one of the best ways to improve their own sense of independence, well-being, connection to self,
creativity, mood and outlook.”
There are only about 100 Guild Certified Feldenkrais® Practitioners practicing in
Washington State, including the 30 graduates of ExplorACTION's previous training.
With only nine other training intensives currently offered in North America, graduates of
this upcoming program will join an elite group of individuals that are at the forefront of
bringing The Feldenkrais Method® into the world.
Prior to this training, ExplorACTION will be hosting 2 Public Workshops in September
& October, and 2 Pre-Training Seminars in January &February 2009 for those who
would like to have a sample of what a training would be like.
