Job Title: Bus Driver (special education)

Department: Transportation

Reports To: Supervisor of Transportation

FLSA Status: Nonexempt

SUMMARY

To transport handicapped students to and from school in a safe, efficient, and economical daily basis and to extracurricular events on a non-regular basis.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

·  Conducts pre-trip inspection of school bus prior to every trip for defects.

·  Uses established routes and designated bus stops.

·  Operates bus on approved time schedule.

·  Reports bus accidents and student injuries to authorities.

·  Conducts emergency evaluation drills in keeping with division regulations.'

·  Drives defensively under varying traffic conditions and inclement weather.

·  Reports personal absences in time for supervisor to secure substitute driver.

·  Reports bus defects to supervisor.

·  Establishes favorable working relationships with other driver, teachers, students, and other school staff.

·  Demonstrates knowledge of State laws and local ordinances.

·  Complies with dress code.

·  Uses professional conduct at all times.

·  Communicates effectively with parents, colleagues, school personnel and everyone within the confines of the job.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

·  Supervise students while riding bus.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

·  Meets school bus driver certification requirements with minimum hours of instruction and satisfactorily pass the knowledge examination.

·  Meet State requirements for appropriate licensing.

·  Meet State physical examination requirements.

·  Meet local and/or State standards for driving test.

·  Meet local and/or State standards for driver record check.

·  Must have successfully completed the National Red Cross First Aid Course.

·  Ability to operate all vehicle types used in transporting students in the school division.

·  Ability to operate radio communication when necessary.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
